The Picayune Item, an award winning daily news publication, is seeking a full time news and sports writer.
The position involves reporting on local news events such government meetings, spot news and features. Some sports coverage is also involved.
Responsibilities include page layout, photography and updating the company’s website and social media accounts.
The ideal candidate must be able to meet deadlines and know AP style.
Experience with InDesign and Photoshop is preferred. Print news writing experience or a degree in journalism or related field is required.
Hours vary and can include weekends or nights.
The ideal candidate should be able to work as a member of a team but also be able to develop stories and work independently. A motor vehicle record check is required, so candidates should have an excellent driving record. A pre-employment drug screen is also required.
Picayune is located in Pearl River County, Miss., close to NASA Stennis Space Center, 50 miles northeast of New Orleans and 50 miles northwest of Gulfport. The ideal candidate would be willing to live/move to the area of Picayune to become part of the community.
