The Gonzales Inquirer is looking for its next reporter. We are an award-winning weekly community newspaper serving a community proud of its history as the place where the fight for Texas Independence began. The Inquirer is also one of the oldest continually published newspapers in the state with editions dating back to 1860.
We publish daily online and have a weekly print newspaper as well as a variety of magazine and special promotional products. While we are very proud of our newspaper's history, not to mention the history of our community – we ARE where the phrase, 'Come & Take It' originated – we are also proud of our future and want the right person to help us take our news coverage to the next level.
You will cover a wide range of news and feature stories ranging from local government, schools and community events to investigative reporting. You should have a strong interest in community reporting and a passion for telling engaging stories.
We're looking for someone with formal journalism education and training (or equivalent experience), ideally with at least two years of experience in a newsroom that produces content on a daily basis. You must be comfortable conducting in-person, virtual and phone interviews, be well-versed in AP style, and have basic photography and photo editing skills. You must also be social media savvy, as this position will be expected to attract a broad digital audience and drive engagement with our work through creative and consistent use of social media. Video skills are a strong plus.
You must be able to meet deadlines and turn quality stories around quickly – we post local content online on a daily basis. Reliable transportation, a valid driver license and auto insurance are required. The qualified candidate will be an organized, motivated self-starter looking to make a difference in a growing community.
Our newsroom staff is not responsible for page layout, but candidates should have a keen eye for producing visually appealing stories with a modern balance of copy and visual elements. Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as computer skills including sharing/collaborating via online services (content management systems, Google Apps and/or Microsoft Office 365/OneDrive) is required.
If you are ready for your next challenge, please include your resume, cover letter and a link to relevant writing samples when applying.
