Are you a reporter looking for your first big break or next big opportunity in a newsroom filled with ambition, hands-on coaching, seasoned editors, talented co-workers and the opportunity to immediately contribute in a significant way? If so, Sonoma Media Investments may have what you’re looking for. We are a Northern California-based media company that is the largest between San Francisco and Portland. We are privately held and owned by local investors – which means no debt, no Wall Street obligations and no obstacles to high-powered journalism.
We believe your career is too valuable to get mired in corporate politics or at newsrooms stuck in traditional approaches. We have a proud tradition of award-winning journalism locally focused in a beautiful (and incredibly newsy) area north of San Francisco: Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino counties, with Wine Country’s “flagship city” being Santa Rosa, California.
And here’s the great thing: Unlike other organizations that are cutting staff, we’re expanding ours. We need a blend of up-and-comers and experienced journalists who are determined to do the best work of their career.
Sonoma Media Investments is the umbrella company of several ambitious newsrooms focused on readers, high-powered reporting and what we call “Big J Journalism.” We’re seeking multi-talented reporters who boast a fire-in-the-belly attitude, intellectual curiosity and a determination to immediately contribute to a news organization determined to be the best of its size in the country.
We aren’t in it for the awards, but we are traditionally viewed as one of California’s best news organizations. We aggressively cover breaking news and deliver high-end enterprise, with an emphasis on strong beat coverage and public service reporting that holds governments accountable to taxpayers. We won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news reporting; further indication that we swarm news as it happens.
We have several digital and print newsrooms: The Press Democrat in Santa Rosa; The Argus-Courier in Petaluma; The Index-Tribune in Sonoma; The North Bay Business Journal; La Prensa, our Spanish language publication; Sonoma Magazine; and a reader-driven monthly publication called Sonoma Gazette. We are financially strong newsrooms with reporters, editors and owners who value original ideas, aggressive reporting, authoritative writing and watchdog coverage that leads to change.
What’s the vision for our organization? A new executive editor arrived in March and shared his commitment to fair and fearless journalism. Here’s his view on where we’re headed as an organization: https://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/opinion/green-heres-what-you-can-expect-from-me/
We have high expectations for those joining our team: You must know how to juggle daily stories, online posts, social media interaction and long-term enterprise and investigative projects. Ideal candidates will have strong multimedia skills and must be adept in use of social media for news gathering and audience engagement. We emphasize beat-reporting skills that yield exclusive stories and the desire (and, ideally, track record) for conceiving and delivering meaningful enterprise. We also have a passion for teaching, so we promise your skills will be elevated if you join our team.
Data acquisition, analysis and fluency in Spanish are a plus.
Candidates must be naturally curious and motivated, with a proven ability to report compelling stories that resonate with readers.
We have built an editing team with decades of experience in writing, editing and storytelling. You also will get to work with an outstanding staff that enjoys the opportunity to collaborate on important community issues while also holding local officials and government agencies accountable.
We value collaboration, honest conversations about Newsroom culture and diversity and pathways to greater professional and personal development. Our editors are committed to one-on-one coaching and staff development. Our desire is to be the best news organization of our size in the country -- and that only can happen with the recruitment AND retention of highly talented journalists.
We're seeking someone who must:
- Be skilled at reporting, writing and growing your digital audience through social media.
- Be comfortable writing on a wide range of issues.
- Have a proven track record of generating story ideas and delivering high-impact enterprise work.
- Develop and maintain relationships with public figures, officials and individuals across our county and in Sacramento.
- Be able to shoot production-quality photographs and videos.
- Have strong knowledge of AP style and be able to write and edit stories for grammar, spelling, content and libel.
- Excel in social media proficiency.
- Respond to emails, texts and voicemails in a timely manner
