Job Description

The graduate assistant for athletics communication maintains regular contact with Notre Dame University's growing athletics teams and coaches to provide information to the media, campus, and public, and assists with the athletics website, video streaming and editing, and social media. Responsibilities include developing favorable media attention and image for the various sports teams, coaches, and the athletic department utilizing a variety of communications media and other appropriate outlets.


Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  1. Maintains statistical and historical records of athletic events and athletes;
  2. Assists as Notre Dame of Maryland's official statistician;
  3. Assists with compilation and reporting of statistics on teams, individuals, and coaches;
  4. Assists communications with conference office and NCAA for timely reporting of team rosters, schedules, statistics, etc.;
  5. Compiles and maintains student-athlete and coach biographical information;
  6. Aids with the video streaming of home athletic events;
  7. Helps administrate the official athletic department social media accounts;
  8. Assists in coordinating athletic photography;
  9. Assists with media relations for all men's and women's athletics teams, student-athletes and coaches;
  10. Researches, writes and edits new releases, features and copy about student-athletes, coaches and sports teams;
  11. Produces athletic publications, including home game programs, schedules, etc.;
  12. Designs, provides content form and provides regular updates to notredamegators.com;
  13. Provides input for selection of Athlete of the Week and oversees accompanying feature story;
  14. Performs such similar, comparable, or related duties as may be required or assigned.


Qualifications:

  • Knowledge: Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in Sport Management, Journalism, English, Communications, or Public Relations. Must be enrolled in a graduate studies program at Notre Dame of Maryland University.
  • Experience: Experience in athletic media relations and/or video editing is a plus.
  • Skills/Aptitude: Ability to use basic word processor software, email, and internet. Statistical software (NCAA Live Stats, Presto Stats), Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere). Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Additional Contract Opportunity: In the event that a candidate is interested in living on campus free of charge, they will be added to the Professional on Duty (POD) rotation which consists of serving in the escalation process of emergency response. The candidate will report to the Director of Housing and Residence Life and will participate in mandatory training prior to the start of the fall and spring semesters. PODs are on duty for a week at a time every 4-6 weeks. Unsatisfactory performance in the POD role can result in removal from housing benefits. Please see the additional contract upon hire if interested in taking advantage of on campus housing and board (meal plan) free of charge.
  • Working Conditions: Normal office environment 20 hours/week, with twelve-month live-in position. Room and board provided; meal plan included when the dining hall is open. Serve on-call evenings (Person on Duty (POD)), weekends and holidays as part of a shared rotation schedule. Must remain on campus at least one (1) weekend each month and notify all appropriate staff when absent from campus. Required POD training will be held the week before the start of each academic term. Some evening and weekend hours. This position has been identified as having a potential risk for occupational exposure to potentially infectious material; as such, this position is required to be offered the Hepatitis B Vaccine at no cost to the employee, and annual training on Preventing Exposure to Bloodbourne Pathogens must be completed.
