ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer for the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank; the position of Senior Director of Development will be responsible for fundraising and coordinating the development strategy, planning, and management; volunteer and prospect engagement.

Emphasis on maximizing transformational, principal, leadership, and major gift activity and results. The SDOD will provide in-house counsel for advancement staff and support the department's day-to-day operations. He/she will develop strategies to build and sustain momentum in goal achievement; and develop and implement business processes related to fundraising management, financial reporting, and progress tracking.

The Senior Director of Development will be responsible for his/her own portfolio of donors at the $100,000 plus level. Additionally, the ideal candidate will work with the Chief Development Officer to implement and plan strategic priorities, including internal materials to keep staff and volunteers focused on collective goals.

The Senior Director of Development will oversee Corporate Relations, Foundation Relations, and Major Gifts, as well as work closely with leadership across the Food Bank on the coordination of team activities, the engagement of volunteers and prospects, and the prioritization of contacts. In coordination with the Director of Marketing & Communications, the SDOD will develop key marketing themes and strategies to communicate the core messages for the development and fundraising efforts at the Food Bank. He or she will also provide communications leadership for fundraising materials, including correspondence, proposals, briefing notes, minutes, memorandums, and other materials

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Fundraising Strategy and Management: Develop and implement short- and long-term strategic plans for fundraising. Manage revenue and expense budgets. Establish, meet, and exceed stretch goals for various fundraising initiatives. Utilize a moves management strategy for individual and institutional donors.

Personally manage a portfolio of high-level individual, foundation, and corporate prospects/donors.

Major Gifts and Foundation Relations: Oversee and evaluate the Major Gifts program. Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors. Evaluate the Foundation Relations program. Develop annual grants calendar and compelling requests/reports. Conduct robust prospecting for foundation grants.

Stakeholder Engagement: Maintain collaborative relationships intra-departmentally and inter-departmentally. Represent the organization at key meetings and speaking engagements. Align the Food Bank’s work with external partners’ priorities. Engage executive directors, senior staff, board members, and volunteers in fundraising efforts.

Donor Cultivation and Stewardship: Engage institutional partners and major donors in various activities.

Arrange site visits, program opportunities, events, and speaking engagements. Craft persuasive proposal packages and solicitation materials. Ensure accuracy and completeness of donor/funder records.

Compliance & Research Advocacy: Maintain knowledge of current philanthropic trends and local business community issues. Collaborate with program and finance staff on government grants applications and reporting. Stay informed about changes in duties and responsibilities based on business needs.

Marketing and Communications: Develop key marketing themes and strategies for fundraising efforts. Provide communications leadership for fundraising materials. Collaborate with the Director of Marketing & Communications to communicate core messages effectively.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • An earned baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Eight to ten years of fundraising and development experience with demonstrated ability to create and implement a viable, sustainable, and measurable development plan.
  • Demonstrate leadership ability to create and nurture long-term relationships with major donors and prospects.
  • Deep understanding of fundraising and communications principles, and evidence of successful leadership in fundraising and communications
  • Evidence of ability to research, understand, and articulate concepts of the Food Bank
  • Exceptional leadership skills with demonstrated ability to lead and mentor staff to achieve goals
  • Ability to independently drive projects and build effective, collaborative relationships with internal and external partners; comfortable working with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances
  • Experience developing case statements, and writing and editing proposals, speeches, websites, videos, and other materials to inspire increased giving
  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
  • Reliable vehicle and driving history acceptable to insurance carrier
  • Valid CA Driver’s License and access to a reliable and insured vehicle. Required to travel within Los Angeles County. May be scheduled to work at either facility in Los Angeles, CA, or the City of Industry, CA
