Wayside Publishing is a progressive developer of world language programs, resources, and materials for middle and high schools across the United States. We partner with educators to craft transformative texts and digital tools that engage students and foster successful communication and understanding across cultures.


What You'll Do

As the Controller you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the accounting function and providing strategic financial leadership to the organization. This role will report directly to the CEO and will play a critical role in driving the company's financial performance and growth.


Responsibilities:

Financial Reporting and Analysis

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Conduct variance analysis and provide insights into financial performance.
  • Present financial reports and analysis to senior management and key stakeholders.

Cash Management and Treasury:

  • Manage cash flow and liquidity to support the company's operations and growth initiatives.
  • Monitor banking activities and optimize banking relationships to minimize costs and maximize returns.
  • Develop and implement cash management strategies to optimize working capital.

Financial Operations:

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of financial transactions and reconciliation of accounts.
  • Implement best practices and process improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

Internal Controls and Compliance:

  • Establish and maintain internal controls to ensure the integrity of financial information and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee the annual external audit process and coordinate audit activities.
  • Stay informed about changes in accounting standards and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.

Tax Management:

  • Oversee all aspects of tax compliance, including federal, state, and local taxes.
  • Ensure timely and accurate filing of tax returns, including income tax, sales tax, and other applicable taxes.
  • Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations and ensure compliance with relevant tax requirements.
  • Coordinate with external tax advisors and auditors to manage tax planning strategies and minimize tax liabilities.
  • Develop and maintain tax accounting policies and procedures in accordance with GAAP and tax regulations.

Other duties as assigned.


Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting and finance roles, with at least 2 years in a leadership position.
  • Strong technical accounting skills and knowledge of GAAP, including familiarity with topics like deferred revenue and royalty expense calculations.
  • Experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and precision.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (NetSuite) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills; be comfortable interacting with executive-level management.
  • Expert level in the use of Excel and competent at using Access or other comparable database tools.
  • Familiarity with data query/data management tools is extremely helpful (Access, SQL, Business Objects).
  • An ability to streamline functions and a passion to learn and grow.
