Job Description

As vice president of marketing and creative services for the Deseret News Publishing Company, you’ll be responsible to lead out on some of our most important initiatives. You will ensure that we continue to grow influence, drive traffic, extend our reach, grow audience engagement, facilitate revenue opportunities, and increase the likelihood that our content is seen, heard or watched and makes a difference in the world.

You’ll report to the publisher, work with other senior executives, lead a small but scrappy marketing team and take the helm of a newly constituted creative services department.

This position will work in our Salt Lake City office three or more days per week, with the flexibility to work from home one to two days per week.

This role will challenge you to:

  • Drive all aspects of marketing and design to achieve company OKRs and revenue targets

  • Ensure that our journalism is read, shared, liked, linked to and mentioned far and wide

  • Measure and track the impact of our reporting as it’s referenced and linked to by other news media

  • Focus and coordinate the work of our outside public relations counsel

  • Use creativity, initiative and marketing best practices to drive new print subscriptions, email newsletter subscriptions, app downloads, website visits, social channel growth and interactions, event ticket sales and other consumer activations to grow our reach and impact

  • Lead paid and organic social promotion strategy across existing and emerging platforms

  • Direct the strategic use of marketing funds to draw attention to important content that builds the respective brands of the Deseret News, Church News, and other company-owned verticals

  • Coordinate with our sister companies to promote our content and initiatives on their channels and help them promote their content and initiatives on our channels

  • Oversee and provide analysis on the effectiveness of all marketing efforts to evaluate reach, engagement, ROI and ultimately to drive strategic and tactical changes

  • Provide reports and other analysis for the publisher and DMC executives as needed

  • Take the lead on important internal and external communication

  • Build a cohesive creative services team that meets short- and long-term deadlines for our advertising and news products

  • Oversee the design and production of all print products, graphic design and editorial illustrations

  • Ensure adherence to our established style guides and provide a consistent articulation of our brands across all channels

  • Coordinate as a stakeholder with the product team as they interpret and integrate the visual identity in our websites and apps

You're a good fit if you:

  • Have 10+ years experience in marketing with experience in digital media, social media marketing, creative content, SEO, CPA, PPC, and affiliate marketing

  • Have 10+ years of brand marketing, brand management, design management or product/merchandising management

  • Are passionate about our mission

  • Thrive working in a dynamic, fast-paced advertising and journalistic environment (we’re not joking; things move fast)

  • Have led creative teams and are practiced at giving constructive feedback that allows a designer to solve problems you identify

  • Are highly analytical, can extract data and create and use pivot tables and slicers in your sleep

  • Have excellent presentation skills and can design great looking slide decks on the fly

  • Have a keen eye for good design, care deeply about visual brand consistency and deplore double spaces between sentences (no Oxford commas either!)

  • Have the ability to multitask, meet deadlines and work under pressure

  • Can convert strategy into tactics, and are adaptable to iteration and strategic pivots

  • Understand audience funnels and think about them in the shower

  • Have experience leading and growing mission-driven teams to accomplish ambitious goals

  • Have a bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, advertising or related experience

You’re an even better fit if you:

  • Have an MBA, other master’s degree or equivalent experience

  • Exude creativity and know how to work with clients whose opinions differ from your own

  • Are a proven consensus builder

  • Have begun to harness the power of generative AI and are adept at influencing and teaching others to do the same

  • Understand best practices and emerging trends in B2C marketing

  • Have a basic understanding of journalism ethics

  • Have produced short-form videos, documentaries or promotional videos

  • Are willing to learn, grow and invest in yourself
