GENERAL SUMMARY

Report for the World (RFW) is a global service journalism program that matches independent local newsrooms with talented journalists who cover critical beats including health, environment, gender, education, labor, disinformation and criminal justice. We launched in February 2021 in India and Nigeria, placing our first-ever cohort of corps members in May 2021 and expanded to Brazil in September 2021, with a total of 15 reporters. With early support from the MacArthur Foundation, Google News Initiative and Microsoft, we expanded the size of the program to 45 reporters in 20 countries in 2023, with the larger goal of supporting 250 reporters worldwide by 2026.

We seek a thoughtful, enterprising, collaborative Africa focused Program Manager with journalism experience, who will work closely with the Executive Director and the core team at Report for the World. This person will also engage with teammates across The GroundTruth Project, home of Report for the World and its sister initiative Report for America (RFA).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Managecontracts, payments and renewals at African newsroom partners in coordination with the Finance department and the general Program Manager at RFW.
  • Build and maintain consistent relationships with African RFW partner newsrooms and corps members.
  • Coordinate events, workshops, and collaborations related to Africa and relevant global themes.
  • Work with other Regional Managers on cross-regional projects.
  • Research potential newsroom partners, fundraising opportunities, and training resources for RFW with a focus on Africa.
  • Mentor African and other corps members on deeper reporting projects and lead relevant trainings.
  • Collect impact and evaluation data related to the programs in Africa and connect them to other regions of coverage at RFW.
  • Produce relevant external communications, including text, video, photo and multimedia.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of five years of related experience in journalism and/or media development, non-profit experience is ideal
  • Program coordination experience
  • Knowledge of public service journalism.
  • Experienced with coordinating a global program.
  • Proficient with CRM platforms like Salesforce and Airtable
  • Understands financial processes.
  • Fluent in at least 2 languages - French preffered.
  • Occasional travel to countries where Report for the World corps members are located.
  • Experienced with successfully developing new tools and processes.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Must occasionally travel to offsite locations outside normal business hours, or if traveling during business hours, the mode of transportation is the fastest option available so as not to impede normal business operations. Must be able to exchange and communicate accurate information in response to questions posed via email, on the phone or in person. Must be able to move items weighing more than 30 pounds. Must be able to operate and use a computer such that tasks are completed within reasonable timeframes, meeting deadlines and commitments. Must be able to interface with all levels of management inside and outside of the organization.
