Job Description

Position Overview

The CEO is responsible for developing DAHfH's strategic vision and goals, in conjunction with the Board; articulating the plans and budgets to achieve the vision; ensuring effective management to meet those goals; and the hiring and management of the professional staff. Integrate the work of Board committees, staff and volunteers into a coherent, consistent and effective program of advocacy, construction, financing and family support, resulting in successful homeownership for partner families. The CEO will provide strong and energetic leadership for the day-to-day activities and long-term initiatives of DAHfH and commit DAHfH resources with the utmost integrity so as to maximize community impact, consistent with the organization's goals and policies approved by the Board.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Vision: In conjunction with the Board, staff and volunteers, update the Organization's strategy and goals, developing actionablle growth objectives, milestones, and timelines. Build consensus among stakeholders such as City of Dallas and appropriate community partners. In particular, lead efforts to explore, advocate for, and implement initiatives to finance and build affordable housing to supplement the Organization's historic approach of building individually-sponsored houses with volunteers.
  • Staff Leadership: Provide effective leadership of staff, building a team that is equipped and motivated for their responsibilities, consistent with the budget guidelines of the Board of Directors. Manage staff consistent with sound human resources management practices and guidelines. Identify development needs of staff and seek avenues to support the filling of those needs. Effectively devlop and maintain staff accountability for meeting metrics and building capacity to take on new challenges.
  • Operational Managment: Oversee plans for, and achievement of , operational goals for such objectives as land acquisition, family selection and support (training, counseling and similar), construction, volunteers, and store management.
  • Financial Management: Direct and be accountable for the Organization's finances. Oversee and own budgets and approve expenditures within Board guidelines. Collaborate with the Board, Chief Financial Officer, and key staff to plan for and provide multi-year budgets that meet strategic and programmatic objectives. Assure that timely and accurate financial and program outcome results are readily provided.
  • Development: Partner with the Senior Director of Development, Marketing Communications to oversee design and execution of coordinated fundraising strategies that encompass home build sponsorships, other corporate support, indiviual giving strategies, foundation and government grants, and special events.
  • Store Management: Monitor the accomplishment of store goals relating to materials procurement, efficiency, profitability, and customer experience, while seeking ways to grow and extend the retail enterprise to return additional dollars for the core business.
  • Communications: As principal spokesperson for DAHfH, proactively reinforce and articulate its mission within the Organization and throughout Dallas County, and with the governmental agencies that fund and regulate its activities as well as current and prospective donors. Build strong and appropriate communications with Board and Executive Committee members.
  • Community Relations: Develop close working relationships with key local institutions and individuals including the City of Dallas and important community organizations. Reach out for partnership initiatives that are consistent with DAHfH's mission, vision and values, and leverage the Organization's presence and reputation.
  • Volunteer Relations: Recognize and publicly acknowledge the essential role played by volunteers in DAHfH's operations. Support and originate recruitment initiatives that extend the volunteer base. Assure that training is meaningful and appropriate, that the volunteer experience is a favorable one, and that volunteer loyalty to the Organization remains strong.
  • Board Development: Manage Board relations in such a manner that assures the effective discharge of the Board's governance responsibilities, elicits continued Board involvement in DAHfH's programs and initiatives, and attracts new Board members who bring even greater capabilities to the service of the Organization. Keep Board well-informed of Dallas Habitat performance, opportunities, and challenges.
  • Habitat International Relations: Maintain effective working channels with Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI), ensuring that DAHfH is employing best practices, meets affiliate obligations, and takes full advantage of HFHI resources and supoort.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in the field of Business, Management, or equivalent
  • Master's degree preferred

Experience/Skills:

  • 10+ years of professional experience with at least 5 years in a substantial leadership role and proven managerial capability in a private sector or nonprofit organization.
  • Experience with key functions of nonprofit management; including, development, financial management, board/staff relations & accountability, volunteer recruitment & retention, program development & outcome measurement.
  • Direct experience managing a construction, retail, commercial banking or social enterprise is preferred.
