Ducks Unlimited, Inc., the world’s leading wetland and waterfowl conservation organization, is seeking a self-motivated, experienced civil engineer to be located in the Vancouver Field Office in Vancouver, WA. The successful applicant will join a highly motivated conservation team of biologists and engineers who are responsible for the planning, design, and construction of wetland and wild land restoration projects in the Pacific Northwest.

Qualifications

Candidates must have at a minimum: ten years of practical experience in a civil design capacity; 2 years of experience in a management/supervisory role; a B.S (or greater) in an engineering curriculum and be a registered civil engineer. Candidates with a strong background in coastal and riverine restoration, fluvial geomorphology, and aquatic organism passage at culverts, bridges and ladders will be viewed favorably. General qualifications desired include experience with GPS surveying, Civil3D, HEC-RAS and/or other H&H modeling software, construction inspection and management, erosion control, soil science, earthwork/grading plans, levee design, and/or pump stations. Demonstrated oral, written and interpersonal communication skills are essential. Candidates must be self-motivated, goal oriented, and able to work with and solve problems in close team-based relationships. Candidates must be able to perform field work that includes strenuous outdoor activity in difficult environmental conditions. Completion of safety training for all-terrain vehicle operation may be required.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work under the Director of Engineering Services to provide oversight of and manage a team of engineers who are responsible for planning, designing, contracting, and performing construction management functions on wetland, riparian, riverine and associated habitat restoration projects in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Utah. The individual will also serve on the Western Region Conservation Leadership Team (WRCLT) – a group comprised of Managers and Directors who provide input into the planning, direction, and operation of DU’s Western Region. The individual will also be responsible for new project and proposal development, working alongside Conservation Area Teams (CATs) that may consist of the Director and/or Manager of Conservation Programs, regional biologists, permitting compliance staff and others. The individual will split time between the management role described above, and a project delivery role that will include similar tasks as undertaken by his/her direct reports. A close working relationship with local, state, and federal personnel, private landowners, and other conservation partners will be an important aspect of the job. The position will require sometimes extensive travel throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Specific duties include:
  • Perform supervisory oversight, coordination, training, support and recruitment for an engineering services team responsible for scoping, planning, designing, bidding and construction/budget management for habitat restoration and enhancement projects
  • Ensure compliance with project delivery agreements, permits, industry standards, and procurement conditions.
  • Review and approve funding/project delivery agreements
  • Participate in leadership and team meetings to support the effective delivery of DU’s mission with project partners
  • Participate in CAT meetings
  • Participate in yearly budget development exercises
  • Work closely with the Manager of Conservation Programs for the Pacific NW to develop lead, strategize and grow the program
  • Perform engineering scoping, planning, design, bidding and construction/budget management on specific projects

SALARY: Salary commensurate with experience- range: $120,000.00- $160,000.00 annually.
