Job Description

About The Role

FT Specialist’s FundFire news service, the leading publication covering the U.S. institutional and high-net-worth investment management industry, is seeking a reporter to join its team of talented editorial staff.

The reporter will cover endowments, foundations, consultants and single-family offices. The role involves keeping up with investment trends affecting large university and nonprofit investors, as well as the family offices run on behalf of ultra-wealthy investors. The reporter will also write about decision-making at the institutional gatekeepers who connect all types of institutional (think big money) investors with asset management firms, such as BlackRock and Vanguard. A reporter on this beat will have the opportunity to write about topics such as the growth in environmental, social and governance, or ESG, investing (and the growing regulatory scrutiny over greenwashing); the evolving market for outsourced chief investment officer services; and the adoption of alternative investments such as private equity and private credit in institutional portfolios.

The reporter will be based in the New York offices of Money-Media, which publishes FundFire and is owned and operated by the Financial Times. FundFire is a daily online news publication that features in-depth coverage of the most relevant issues affecting the institutional asset management industry.

What will I be responsible for?

Reporting duties: The reporter will be responsible for unearthing news, trends and developments in the institutional investment industry. The reporter will develop a network of sources including asset management firms and institutional investors to help generate news scoops, story ideas and insights to share with readers.

This is an ideal opportunity for a reporter who wants to take ownership of an important beat on a highly influential industry publication. The reporter will be expected to produce three or more stories a week using analytical, quantitative and/or documentary material, as well as interviews with high-level executives. The reporter will have the opportunity to break news as well as to work on in-depth, enterprise stories.

Top candidates should be enthusiastic about business journalism; possess strong intellectual curiosity, creativity, and time management skills; and thrive in a team-based work environment. Applicants must be capable of understanding complicated topics quickly and then reporting on these issues in a clear manner.

The role also involves contributing to multi-media content, including video interviews and webcasts, as well as creating basic charts and tables. There are occasional opportunities to collaborate with the FT on panels and other endeavors and to travel to conferences.

Every reporter and editor at FundFire is held to fundamental standards of integrity, honesty and journalistic ethics. We value collaboration and creativity.

What experience/skills do I need to be successful in this role?

  • Experience with beat reporting and writing longer analytical articles
  • Excellent editorial judgment
  • Attention to detail
  • Experience with content in multiple formats (e.g. photo, video, charts & graphs, etc.) and reworking stories from concept to publication
  • Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate with other journalists

How can I apply?

Please submit your resume and a cover letter explaining why you'd be a good fit for the position
