Job Title: Technical Writing Supervisor

Summary

The ideal candidate will start by designing and creating user manuals, how-to guides, articles, and other support documents for NetProApp, simplifying complex and technical information for easier understanding. As the project expands, the role will grow to include leadership of a team focused on these tasks. The candidate will collaborate with the video team to produce instructional and tutorial videos for NetProApp. Additionally, they will be responsible for developing and distributing technical information across the organization’s communication channels, such as release notes, patch notes, and a biweekly newsletter titled “What's New or Things You Might Not Know.”

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Determine the needs of users of technical documentation.
  • Study product and talk with product designers and developers.
  • Work with technical staff to make products and instructions easier to use.
  • Write or revise supporting content for products.
  • Edit material prepared by other writers or staff.
  • Incorporate screenshots, animation, graphs, illustrations, or photographs to increase users’ understanding of the material.
  • Select appropriate media, such as manuals or videos, for the message or audience.
  • Standardize content across platforms and media.
  • Collect user feedback to update and improve content.
  • Create and maintain a support wiki and knowledge base for the app.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Must be able to simplify complex, technical information for colleagues and consumers who have nontechnical backgrounds.
  • Must be detail-oriented to create instructions for others to follow.
  • Imagination. Must be able to think about a procedure or product as if they are someone who does not have technical knowledge.
  • Teamwork. Must be able to work well with other writers, designers, editors, illustrators, and the technical workers whose procedure or product they are explaining.
  • Technical skills. Must be able to understand complex information.
  • Writing skills. Must have excellent writing skills to be able to explain technical information clearly.
Physical Requirements
  • Stand or Sit: Must be able to remain stationary 50% of the time.
  • Walk: Must be able to move about inside the office to access cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Use hands/fingers to handle or feel: Constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a copy machine, computer, and printer.
  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl: Constantly positions self to maintain providing service for machinery, computers, printers, etc.
  • Talk/hear: The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Carry weight, lift: Frequently moves boxes weighing up to 20 pounds across the office for various needs unassisted, 25 pounds heavier with assistance.
Experience and/or Education Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, or a related field highly preferred.
  • Technical knowledge: Must know about a technical field, such as engineering or computer and information technology.
  • Must have at least 3 years of relative experience.
  • Preferred to have experience hiring staff and leading a department.
