Public Safety Supervisor

The Public Safety Supervisor will report directly to the Director of Public Safety and secondarily to the Assistant Vice President of Operations Support. Under the direction of the Director of Public Safety, this position supervises Broadlawns Medical Center (BMC) public safety programs and policies designed to create a controlled environment. The Public Safety Supervisor is responsible for coordination of activities of the Public Safety Department and staff to provide protection for patients, visitors, employees, and hospital assets.

Roles & Responsibilities

  1. Assist the Director of Public Safety with program management and department budget management
  2. Plan, organize, and implement policies and procedures for internal security and protection of the organization during civil disturbances or security threats to organization.
  3. Maintain liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
  4. Prepare and update job descriptions and departmental procedures.
  5. Coordinate with BMC Human Resources to recruit, interview and retain Public Safety Officers.
  6. Onboard and train new Public Safety Officers and ensure that officers are adequately prepared for their duties as outlined in their job descriptions.
  7. Establish, implement, and evaluate departmental training programs, and ensure all department staff complete required training in a timely manner.
  8. Maintain professional growth and development opportunities for department staff.
  9. Evaluate Public Safety Officers and complete personnel processes including recognition and corrective action, as applicable.
  10. Present information regarding public safety procedures to all BMC Staff including new employees.
  11. Initiate investigations, as appropriate; review department operations to detect criminal activity and investigate losses which occur at BMC locations. Conduct internal investigations and audits to reduce potential internal theft and/or other losses.
  12. Maintain positive public relations with visitors, patients, and external agencies.
  13. Assist and/or lead safety programs which control and limit patient and employee safety incidents.
  14. Proactively eliminate fire and other hazards.
  15. Develop, implement, and audit systems for appropriate surveillance and security of physical buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  16. Ensures minimum public safety staffing; ensures that Public Safety Officer rounds and directives are maintained on all shifts.
  17. Responsible for the care and maintenance of department supplies and equipment; evaluates and budgets for equipment and supplies as needed.
  18. Ensure all departmental records, reports, statistics, and files are maintained in an orderly manner and easily accessible for audits.

Schedule
  • Day Shifts (7am - 3:30pm)

Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, and/or related field or and Associates Degree with 2+ years Healthcare experience.
  • 2+ years Public Safety, Law Enforcement or related experience.
  • 1+ year of Leadership experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to respond to on-call communications in a timely manner.
  • Proven ability to remain calm and consistently communicate professio9nally.
  • Valid Iowa Drivers license
