JOB TITLE: Volunteer Youth Football Coach

EMPLOYER: City of West Park

DEPARTMENT: Parks & Recreation

REPORTS TO: Recreation Manager

PAY RANGE: Volunteer (No Pay)

EFFECTIVE DATE: 5/3/2023

SUMMARY: A successful volunteer candidate will play an active role in the City’s football program by promoting a positive and encouraging environment with the youth group programs for operational success. The purpose of this position is to provide support to athletic activities, have daily contact with the public, and require the ability to interact with City staff, volunteers and individuals of various backgrounds in a professional, positive, and tactful manner at all times. Independent judgment is required to identify, select and apply the most appropriate of available guidelines and procedures. This position is responsible for designing and implementing basic sports strategies, scheduling team practices and games, and ensuring all team members get equal playing time.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and implement sporting strategies.
  • Provide a safe and fun environment for children.
  • Work to improve team unity and sportsmanship; teach young athletes the fundamentals of the football sport; and emphasize skills development including safety, fair play, and sportsmanship.
  • Give each player adequate playing time with fairness.
  • Put the well-being of players ahead of personal desire to win.
  • Set realistic and age-appropriate expectations for all team members.
  • Ensure the safety of the team during practice sessions and games.
  • Plan, schedule and supervise games and practices.
  • Inform players and parents about games, practices, events, cancellations, and make-ups.
  • Supervise assistant coaches and team parents.
  • Ensure proper sideline behavior from team members and parents.
  • Promote the values of responsibility and commitment, and emphasize the importance of academics first and foremost.
  • Develops and coordinates youth football training practices/programs; ensures timely delivery and evaluation of programs throughout the league.
  • Assesses and develops volunteers’ skills and abilities; assigns qualified volunteers to specific tasks based on own assessment and volunteers’ interests.
  • Monitors volunteers’ performance and provides regular feedback; works to encourage and motivate volunteers.
  • Provides day-to-day guidance and oversight of volunteers; actively works to promote and recognize performance.
  • Learn and follow ALL association and league rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Attend all association and league meetings, classes, and functions.
  • Assume responsibility for equipment that has been provided by the City of West Park.
  • Attend any required trainings.
  • Attend regularly scheduled coaches’ meetings.
  • The ability to travel to and from all games.
  • Inform the Recreation Manager of any problems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Two to four years related experience or equivalent
  • CPR/AED and First aid valid certification
  • Required screening of a Level II background check and drug testing
  • Completion of the following safety courses prior to season: Crash Course Concussion Education, Prepare Sports Safety Course, SafeSport Trained Course, the Fundamentals of Coaching and Heat and Illness prevention, football coaches clinic and scholastics trainings.
  • In depth knowledge of football sporting strategies
  • Ability to work cooperatively with volunteers, parents, youth and other members of the community.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations and be patience and understanding
  • Demonstrated proficiency in supervising and team motivation
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize teams
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm
