Job Description

A natural gas pipeline inspector plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety, integrity, and compliance of natural gas pipelines. The job involves examining and assessing various aspects of the pipeline system to identify potential issues, verify compliance with industry standards and regulations, and prevent incidents that could pose risks to the environment and public safety.

Job Overview:

Supervise the quality control process for all natural gas distribution installation tasks carried out by contracted teams. As a representative of the utility, the inspector is tasked with fostering professional relationships with third-party contractors, vendors, and company staff. While not directly managing contractor activities, the inspector ensures quality assurance by inspecting work and materials to meet compliance standards. Additionally, the inspector holds Stop Work Authority and is accountable for upholding safety protocols at the work site.:

Inspection and Assessment Duties:

  • Conduct routine and specialized inspections of natural gas pipelines, compressor stations, and other related facilities.
  • Perform visual and non-destructive testing (NDT) to identify potential defects or anomalies in the pipeline infrastructure.
  • Document the progress of each project assigned daily and complete documentation as requested by the client.
  • Meet with contractors to review job and discuss any concerns they may have and confirm that they are Operator Qualified (OQ)
  • Successfully complete computer OQ training and additional contractor specs.
  • Inspect crews joining plastic pipes and fittings using heat fusion or mechanical methods.
  • Inspections of padding and shading material.
  • Logging Fusions
  • Recording and manually mapping assets / as-built construction drawings
  • Visually inspect the welds and fusions on fittings and joints and verify adherence to all manufacturer and client procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate OQ skills as required and outlined in the client’s O & M
  • Work with detailed plans and procedures, track quantities and material and verify the accuracy of mapping and as-built documentation.
  • Inspection of installation of natural gas pipeline activities including excavation, installation, and backfill/restoration.
  • Maintain detailed records of inspections, findings, and corrective actions taken.
  • Prepare comprehensive inspection reports, including recommendations for repairs or improvements.

Physical Demands:

  • Duties are performed primarily in an outdoor setting with exposure to inclement weather conditions, such as: extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, ice, snow, and wind.
  • Must be able to work overtime when duties cannot be performed within a normal work schedule.
  • This position is physically active, with lifting required. Must be able to bend and lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Drive 50 to 200+ miles daily as required by the assigned geographic locating area.
  • Stand and walk lengthy distances (1+ miles)
  • Ability to ascend or descend into areas at job site to complete inspections.
  • Must be able to perform work in a very loud, active construction environment.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED (Required)
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record (Required)
  • All applicants must pass a background check (Required)
  • A pre-employment drug test as well as quarterly random drug testing (Required)
  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME, API).
  • Proficiency in computers to include Microsoft Office (Preferred)
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience in natural gas pipeline inspection or a related field. (Preferred)

Working Conditions:

  • The job may require outdoor work in various weather conditions, as well as occasional travel to different pipeline locations. Ability to work outdoors, walk, and stand the majority of the time in all weather.
  • Must be willing to travel and work extended periods of time throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.
  • ·Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends.
  • Typical work hours range from 40 to 60 hours per week, 5-6 days per week.
  • Communicate effectively, both written and orally
  • Ability to solve problems, manage time effectively, and meet project deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Required to maintain accurate project records and documentation during construction.
  • Must adhere to safety standards and take a proactive role in reducing safety risk.
  • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
  •  Ability to maintain positive working relations with clients, customers, and team members.
  • Exceptional safety and quality awareness
  •  Ability to perform assigned responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • Must reside and be willing to travel on any given day within the described area. Your job will consist of inspecting the proper construction of pipeline systems.

Compliance Verification:

  • Ensure that the construction, maintenance, and operation of pipelines comply with industry standards, codes, and regulatory requirements.
  • Review documentation and records to verify that all relevant permits and approvals are in place.

Safety Oversight:

  • Monitor safety practices and procedures to ensure compliance with industry safety standards.
  • Participate in safety meetings and provide recommendations for continuous improvement.

Emergency Response:

  • Be prepared to respond to emergency situations and incidents, providing support and expertise to mitigate risks and ensure a timely response.

Training and Development:

  • Stay current on industry developments, technological advancements, and regulatory changes.
  • Participate in training programs to enhance skills and knowledge related to pipeline inspection.
