General Summary

The Society of American Foresters (SAF) is the national scientific and educational organization representing the forestry profession in the United States. Founded in 1900 by Gifford Pinchot, it is the largest professional society for foresters and other forest management professionals and academics in the world. SAF’s mission is to advance sustainable management of forest resources through science, education, and technology; to enhance the competency of its members; to establish professional excellence; and to use our knowledge, skills, and conservation ethic to ensure the continued health, integrity, and use of forests to benefit society in perpetuity. The Social Media Specialist supports the execution of the communications strategy while supporting and advancing the mission of SAF through the creation of compelling content, brand marketing, and social media engagement. They are, for all intents and purposes, the digital face and personality of SAF, #forestproud, and the Capitol Christmas Tree.

Roles and responsibilities of this position run the gamut from social content creation, to building, implementing, and managing communication campaigns. The chosen candidate will be self-driven, well versed in social platforms and communications, and looking to grow professionally. 

Reporting to the Director of Communications & Outreach, the Social Media Specialist curates and monitors social media engagement and content creation for each of SAF’s primary social platforms using target audiences and strategic, brand-based messaging. They are an essential part of the SAF Outreach Team.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  • Set, plan, and implement social media and communication campaigns and strategies. 
  • Create and publish content for all SAF (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin, YouTube, Flickr) and #forestproud (Twitter, Instagram) social accounts.
  • Strategically amplify social media content of partners and sector leaders to grow SAF’s presence and following.
  • Be adept to social listening, digital presence, brand awareness, and analytics to gain the advantage of social preparedness and trend engagement.
  • Build relationships with SAF members, #forestproud supporters, and strategic partners throughout the forest community. 
  • Monitor and engage with the forest community and those outside of the sector on key forest issues across all social platforms.
  • Stay up-to-date with digital marketing trends and best practices. 
  • Monitor, track, and report on social campaign performance. 
  • Experienced in social media ads manager backends to boost posts, and create and monitor social media ads (Meta, LinkedIn).
  • Make recommendations and help incorporate the ‘voice of the community’ into content and strategic messaging ahead of and through the launch of new social media platforms.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the annual Outreach Team Workplan.
  • Contribute to and help maintain an organization-wide communications and content calendar.
  • Create a social media presence at necessary events including the annual conference.
  • Work with internal teams and departments on social media needs.   
  • Develop, monitor, and report (monthly) on communications key performance indicators (KPIs) including, but not limited to, reach, engagement, and impressions.
  • Maintain and strengthen brand standards, ensuring all communications adhere to organizational style and brand guidelines.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, forestry, or relevant field.
  • Previous experience as a community manager, social media manager, or communications professional for a small business, university, nonprofit, or association.
  • 2-4 years of hands-on experience creating and managing digital assets, channels, and content calendars. 
  • Advanced in Windows-based applications (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Canva, and Adobe Creative Suite applications for graphic design and video editing.
  • Experience with Google Analytics, social media management platforms (e.g. Hootsuite), and digital ads management.
  • Top-notch verbal, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and keen creative vision.
  • Self-motivated with proven ability to work both independently and contribute as a team member.
  • Excellent customer service ethic; experience in cultivating internal and external collaborative relationships.
  • Ability to communicate complex issues in an easily understood and impactful way.
  • Exceptional time management skills and ability to handle multiple deadlines at once.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to events and conferences.

Preferred Education / Skills

  • Experience with a content management system a plus
  • Knowledge and passion for forests and natural resources are a plus.

LOCATION

Remote for Eastern Time Zone with the ability to travel 10%

Note: Currently not accepting candidates located in the state of California

Salary

$55,000-$60,000 Annually
