As a member of the Human Resources Team and reporting to the Chief People Officer, the Learning and Engagement Specialist is responsible for creating and administering programs to support the ongoing learning, engagement, and success of Johnstone’s most valuable resource – our people.

The individual selected for this role will be our Learning & Development subject matter expert (SME) and have the opportunity to have their work impact the entire organization and work on processes at every level within the company. Additionally, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule with at least 2 days spent at our Portland office.

Position responsibilities:

Training & Development:

  • Supports employee training and development by serving as a resource in assessing needs, identifying resources, supporting program development, creating training materials, coordinating training activities, and evaluating training effectiveness. Ensures the required training is completed in a timely manner and appropriate records are maintained.
  • Provides guidance to employees and managers on career development best practices.
  • Serves as an administrator for Johnstone University and works closely with the JU team to provide employees and managers with training content, creating training tracks, assigning training, monitoring completion, and maintaining records.
  • Supports leadership development programs, including programs for new, existing, and high-potential leaders, by coordinating assessment processes, drafting, and maintaining program materials, coordinating activities, and supporting evaluation processes.
  • Supports new employee onboarding processes by drafting and maintaining company-level onboarding programs and materials, coordinating company-level onboarding activities, and supporting managers in building team and job-level onboarding plans. Ensures smooth hand-offs between stakeholders involved in the onboarding process.
  • Collects data from employees in the first 30, 60, 90 days of employment and provides insights to continuously improve recruiting and onboarding processes.

Performance Management:

  • Supports employees and managers in defining performance objectives, including new employee and annual goal setting, by drafting and communicating best practices, Johnstone processes and procedures.
  • Coordinates annual and mid-year review processes to measure actual performance against objectives, including goal setting, regular check-ins, feedback, and formal reviews.
  • Ensures employees and managers have the knowledge and skills needed to use and take advantage of the performance management system by documenting processes, and creating and delivering training materials. Provides user support.

Engagement:

  • Administers the company’s Anniversary Milestone and Values Recognition programs to highlight employee contributions and milestone achievements.
  • Supports the company’s Employee Survey Program, including Annual Engagement, Lifecycle, and Pulse surveys, by coordinating survey processes, creating reports and presentations, soliciting additional feedback, coordinating and reporting on action items/Commitments.

Analytics:

  • Tracks and reports on key Learning and Engagement metrics, such as training program completion, promotions, goal attainment, performance ratings, high-potential retention, turnover, and reasons for leaving. Assists in understanding root causes and developing improvement action plans.

Position requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university in Training and Development, Human Resource Management, or related field; at least 3 years of experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • An APTD certification preferred, but not required for this role.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and techniques.
  • Skill in conducting training needs assessments.
  • Ability to evaluate and select appropriate training resources, methods, and platforms.
  • Ability to develop training tracks and curricula.
  • Ability to create training documentation and procedures.
  • Ability to use business and training-specific software programs, such as MS Office, Camtasia, or Articulate.
  • Ability to utilize current HRIS platforms. ADP preferred.
  • Ability to develop and use systems for organizing and keeping track of information.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple concurrent tasks and activities based on customer and organization needs.
  • Problem-solving skills: listening to, interpreting, and meeting the needs of others; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; diagnosing and rectifying problems.
  • Ability to collect and analyze relevant data, as well as draw actionable conclusions.
  • Ability to listen to others to identify needs and concerns.
  • Ability to write business correspondence and procedures in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to establish positive and productive relationships with others.
