WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Under the direction of our Program Manager, the Suicide Prevention Specialist provides suicide prevention outreach and education including providing individuals connection to community resources. The position provides an opportunity to practice a wide range of clinical skills, program development, and knowledge of the expanding field of behavioral health.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ability to relate to and effectively communicate with people from all economic, racial, age, ethnic, and social groups - Strong desire to provide non-judgmental, appropriate assistance to persons in need
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program staff and service providers
  • Lead and provide suicide prevention outreach, education and training opportunities across the Los Angeles county
  • Serve as an agency liaison to the community and media regarding suicide and mental health topics.
  • Be knowledgeable and current about trends in suicide/suicide prevention.
  • Serve as part of the Helpline Center team for the local suicide prevention taskforce.
  • Assist with the promotion and marketing of suicide prevention services.
  • Coordinate with school, business and other organization to provide suicide prevention trainings
  • Become a certified trainer in (but not limited to) ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), MHFA (Mental Health First Aid) or QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer).
  • Assist in the coordination of the outreach and development of formal relationships between partners (911 PSAPs, behavioral health providers) to maintain continuity of care.
  • Develop and implement processes and procedures for 911/988 agency coordination and mental health partners.
  • Provide evidence-informed brief supportive counseling, crisis intervention and suicide prevention support to callers and/or chat/text visitors who are in emotional distress.
  • Conduct assessments in accordance with program policies & procedures.
  • Utilize resource referral database to provide information and referral assistance to callers seeking mental health and substance abuse services.
  • Provide follow-up to high-risk callers reporting suicidal and/or homicidal thoughts and behaviors.
  • Manage interactions to ensure appropriate level of support is provided in efficient manner.
  • Accurately and efficiently document client interactions.
  • Attend all scheduled staff meetings and complete ongoing training assignments as required.
  • Follow agency policies, including personnel and programs.
  • At times, staff will be required to perform additional duties beyond those specified.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor’s degree in mental health related fields.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in mental health related fields.
  • Strong coaching and people management skills and ability to build a cohesive environment. across multiple teams and business units.
  • Strong public speaking ability to present ideas, information, and viewpoints clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Effective collaboration and relationship building skills.
  • Ability to use analysis, experience, and judgment to make effective decisions.
  • Excellent time management, organization, and prioritization skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Working knowledge of mental health services and suicide prevention services.
  • Working knowledge of agency policies and procedures, HIPAA, DMH, Department of Social Services, and other state, federal regulations related to outpatient and crisis line services.
