Job Description

The Highlands Ranch Metro District is currently accepting applications for a seasonal Community Relations Intern position. This is a wonderful hands-on opportunity for a responsible, eager, motivated, and detail-oriented student with excellent communication skills to work with the Community Relations team during the summer. The intern will gain experience in community relations and will have the opportunity to become personally involved in a fun and rewarding internship with a local government in an innovative community.

This is a seasonal part-time position working up to 32 hours from approximately late May through early to mid-August. Some evenings and weekend hours, as well as working activities outdoors, will be required to participate in special events and meetings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with the planning, promotion, and execution of the Metro District’s activities, events, communications efforts, and community outreach projects.
  • Write and edit news releases, articles for the newsletter and e-newsletters, website content, and copy for other promotional/informational documents.
  • Assist with social media content planning and other communications projects.
  • Shoot photos and video at events and capture photos and video of visitors to parks in the community.
  • Research background information and interview individuals for articles.
  • Perform various administrative duties, including, but not limited to bulk mailings, copying, and delivering brochures and fliers.
  • Design and layout various brochures and fliers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Applicants for this position must be a college junior or senior enrolled in a degree program in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, English or related field with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a must.
  • Knowledge of Word, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Premiere, Excel, and Outlook are required.
  • Photography skills and experience with social media content creation is highly desired.
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds and work outdoors and get your hands dirty in various weather conditions at events.
  • A valid Colorado driver’s license, acceptable motor vehicle record and reliable transportation are also required for this position.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the direct supervision of the Community Relations Manager and the Community Relations Coordinator.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Personal computers, including Office 365, spreadsheet applications, graphics, web and database software, a DSLR camera, hand tools, calculator, MFP Copier/Scanner, cell phone, automobile, or light truck.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to thirty (30) pounds. Must be able to work outdoor events and be outdoors for various activities and projects. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office and in outside weather conditions, including inclement weather. The employee regularly works in the presence of the Metro District’s customers.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

WORK SCHEDULE

This is a seasonal, part-time position working up to 32 hours from approximately late May through early to mid-August. Some evenings and weekend hours, as well as working activities outdoors, will be required to participate in special events and meetings. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the job.
