The Communications Coordinator is responsible for working on a wide variety of communication materials and initiatives to advance the visibility of Zoo New England’s Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo through impactful storytelling and clear messaging that supports brand and mission-related objectives. Given the variety of writing projects, the Communications Coordinator must be adept at adjusting the tone and voice of writing so that it is most effectively tailored to different audiences and platforms. The Communications Coordinator must have previous experience working with media as duties also include assisting in scheduling and coordinating media visits, information gathering and research, and preparing message points when needed. This position reports to the Vice President of Marketing and Communications.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Write a variety of different content to support communications and marketing efforts, including press releases and media advisories, brochures, flyers, and the annual report, as well as assisting with website copy and other writing projects as assigned
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to understand their communication needs, and develop communication plans accordingly
  • Assist with onsite media visits as well as media coordination, outreach and message points.
  • Coordinate communications calendars and deadlines
  • Support the Social Media Specialist with customer care and content creation
  • Coordinate communications calendars and deadlines
  • Responsible for the content creation and upload to digital screens at both Zoos
  • Administrative support to the Marketing and Communications department
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or other related field
  • 1-3 years of experience in communications, public relations or a related field
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills working with the public, staff, and Zoo partners
  • Strong editing skills
  • Detail oriented, highly organized, and keen attention to deadlines a must
  • Motivated self-starter who takes initiative
  • Ability to adjust quickly to changing priorities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Strong commitment to the mission of Zoo New England

 

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Experience working with a CMS
  • Familiarity with AP style
  • Experience with e-communications platforms
  • Experience with social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok, and management
  • Photography and/or video experience

 

Hours

The Communications Coordinator’s scheduled hours will be Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Due to the nature of the position, there will times when the Communications Coordinator will be required to work early mornings, evenings and weekends at Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo, as well as at off-site events.
