Job Description

As a Design Team Manager, your primary role is to lead and oversee the design team within an organization. Your responsibilities encompass a wide range of tasks that focus on managing the team's workflow, ensuring project success, fostering creativity and collaboration, and achieving the company's design goals. Here are some key duties and functions typically associated with the role:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: You lead and mentor the design team, providing guidance and support to help them grow professionally and develop their skills. You'll be involved with the hiring, onboarding, and managing the performance of team members.
  • Project Management: As a Design Team Manager, you'll be in charge of planning, organizing, and prioritizing design projects. You'll allocate resources effectively and ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Design Strategy: Collaborating with other stakeholders, you'll contribute to the development of the design strategy for the organization. This involves understanding business objectives and user needs to create designs that align with the company's overall vision.
  • Collaboration: Facilitating collaboration between the design team and other departments is crucial. You'll work closely with other teams to ensure seamless integration of design with the overall product development process.
  • Quality Control: Ensuring the quality and consistency of design outputs is a critical aspect of the role. You'll conduct design reviews, provide constructive feedback, and maintain design standards across projects.
  • Budgeting and Resource Allocation: You'll be responsible for managing the design team's budget and making decisions regarding resource allocation, such as software, tools, and training.
  • Performance Evaluation: Regularly assessing the performance of the design team and providing feedback to help team members improve their skills and achieve their goals.
  • User-Centered Design: Promoting a user-centered design approach is essential. You'll encourage the team to conduct user research, usability testing, and incorporate user feedback into design iterations.
  • Innovation and Continuous Learning: Encouraging a culture of innovation and continuous learning within the design team to stay updated with the latest design trends and technologies.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Effectively communicating design concepts and strategies to stakeholders at all levels of the organization, including executives and clients.
  • Conflict Resolution: Addressing conflicts and challenges that may arise within the team and working towards constructive resolutions.
  • Review contracts and drawings for changes upon return from clients; consulting with clients when necessary to obtain clarification on desired changes.
  • Follow up with Designers to ensure design aspects are ordered and/or completed in a timely manner so that projects are completed by the designated deadline.
  • Create shells, 2D and 3D drawings based on client specifications.
  • Participate in meetings with Design Reps.
  • Collaborate with other departments as necessary to resolve project issues or delays within scope of authority assigned
  • Create 3D schematics of all products to be used in installation guides.
  • Create 2D Sign Off Drawings of Products.
  • Create 3D Blocks
  • Review Millwork and construction drawings and check for accuracy; make corrections as necessary and communicate corrections to design team.
  • Match Millwork drawings to 2D schematics.

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of design experience preferably in millwork, kitchen or bath industry
  • Experience with phase I & II drawings, creating space plans, shells, 2D & 3D drawings, construction documents, consulting with clients and contractors/architects, presenting material selections and maintaining a design library

Special Requirements:

  • Proficient in AutoCAD software
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends are business needs dictate

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office application such as Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Intermediate knowledge of design principles and techniques
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and as an individual contributor
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
