Environmental Health and Safety Specialist

Reporting directly to the Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Manager and indirectly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist will facilitate and maintain the Company’s EHS programs and procedures and serve a subject matter expert for safety regulations and best practices. Responsibilities include maintaining EHS policies and procedures in compliance with applicable regulations and requirements and managing and applying safety concepts in the workplace.

NOTE: This role is subject to the incumbent’s ability to hold and maintain an NRC Q-clearance, as well as their ongoing ability to maintain nuclear site access.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Administer and maintain the Company’s EHS plan and implementing procedures.
• Oversee operations daily to ensure all employees follow safety procedures and employ best practices.
• Perform job and work site hazards analyses and reviews; work with employees and management to define hazards controls to be integrated into planning activities, processes, work instructions, and work execution.
• Monitor and evaluate activities and work areas, and address safety issues and concerns with employees; provide feedback into the work processes of issues observed.
• Regularly inspect and audit facilities and practices for safety compliance and address issues or concerns promptly.
• Maintain and use monitoring equipment such as gas detectors, decibel meters, thermometers, etc.
• Ensure personal protective equipment and other safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, eyewash stations, safety showers, etc., is inspected and maintained in good working order.
• Ensure proper chemical and/or hazmat spill preparedness and clean-up supplies are maintained.
• Capture and report safety event notifications, investigations, and root causes analyses.
• Track and report Company safety metrics/key performance indicators.
• Coordinate, track, and provide EHS-related training in conjunction with the Training Manager.
• Maintain continuous improvement of the Company’s safety culture.
• Report environmental and injury and illness data as required to comply with EPA and OSHA requirements.

Basic Qualifications, Education, and Experience:

• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE/NRC “Q” security clearance (after employment starts).
• Bachelor or associate degree in environmental health and safety or related field, or equivalent experience in lieu of a degree.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience working in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
• Knowledge of OSHA 300 reporting and accident investigation requirements.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
• Ability to perform audits, write and submit reports.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated training and peer influencing skills.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Desired Qualifications

• Active DOE/NRC “Q” clearance or equivalent (DOD Top Secret).
• Experience developing and implementing safety programs based on regulatory requirements and standards.
• Experience working in a nuclear industrial environment.
• Experience as a Radiation Safety Officer or Radiation Protection Technician strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of nuclear regulatory safety and reporting requirements.
• Knowledge of ISO 14001/45001 EHS management systems and principles.
• First aid and/or CPR certification.
• OSHA 30-hour certification.
