Job Description

Overview:

The Manager, Executive and Strategic Communications primarily supports our CEO and two Board Chairs with presentations, videos, speeches, and other internal and external communications deliverables, while also providing support for strategic communications and public relations.

The ideal candidate is a strong writer, storyteller, strategist, and a self-starter, able to manage projects, and work both independently and in partnership with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. This individual is proficient at both technical and creative writing and has a passion for supporting senior leaders in creating messages and providing detailed planning that helps the organization inspire, motivate, and engage internal and external partners.

Candidates must be able to understand complex and technical subjects, make connections between global business trends/developments and the internal audit profession, and craft compelling narratives about how those trends and developments impact the internal audit profession. Strong PowerPoint, presentation design, and speechwriting skills are essential.

This position supports the Director, Communications and Public Relations, and will coordinate with a broad spectrum of volunteers, employees, and partners on communications efforts.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage, create, and support executive communications (Estimated 70%)
    1. Support CEO and two Board Chairs by developing communications materials including presentations, speeches, video scripts, talking points, letters, bylined articles, op-ed pieces, employee and volunteer messages, and content for social media platforms.
    2. Maintain an executive editorial calendar in coordination with CEO’s Executive Assistant to ensure communications deliverables are drafted, approved, and distributed on deadline.
    3. Support the IIA’s Executive Speaker Engagement process, which manages all speaking requests for IIA leaders.
    4. Partner with internal stakeholders and leaders to solicit and incorporate product and issue updates in monthly reports.
    5. Identify opportunities to enhance the executive communications function through process improvements, tools, and collaboration.
    6. Monitor business, audit, and finance issues and trends for executive presentations.

  • Manage, create, and support strategic communications (Estimated 20%)

  1. Support the development of integrated communications plans in alignment with organizational priorities and value propositions.
  2. Write and deliver polished content in various forms, including press releases, blog posts, newsletters, video scripts, web and social media content.
  3. Partner with internal stakeholders to ensure communications are aligned to strategic objectives and brand-related communications efforts.
  4. Ensure projects are completed accurately, on deadline, and according to message delivery requirements.
  5. Serve as a trusted communications advisor; help elevate organizational communications by advising colleagues on best practices for content creation and delivery.

  • Support PR initiatives (Estimated 10%)
    1. Help develop and execute annual communications strategic plan with support from external PR agency.
    2. Assist with drafting and distributing compelling press releases to highlight milestones, initiatives, or events.
    3. Support PR activities for IIA partnership organizations (COSO and Anti-Fraud Collaboration).
    4. Help cultivate and manage a network of spokespeople, experts and volunteer leaders to represent organizational positioning, key messages and advocate on key issues, provide counsel and prepare for speaking engagements.
    5. Develop and maintain relationships with key media, journalists, and influencers.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in executive/corporate communications, public relations, and/or journalism.
  • Exceptional PowerPoint, presentation design, speechwriting, and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated executive presence; ability to provide coaching and offer new ideas with ease, and handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • High-level proficiency in critical communication skills; able to perform well under pressure to meet deadlines, resolve challenges and meet goals.
  • Self-motivated and able to set/achieve objectives in a fast-paced environment; excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strategic thinker who can make connections between global issues and our organization and profession and translate complex/technical content into compelling narratives.

Preferred:

  • Association and/or non-profit experience, particularly in finance or a technical field.
  • Experience working with global partners.
  • Proven ability to build positive relationships.
  • Able to identify interdependencies, risks, and opportunities, coordinate and deliver programs, and provide counsel to stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with Cision or other media relations databases.
