Equal Rights Advocates (ERA) is a national civil rights organization dedicated to protecting and expanding economic and educational access and opportunities for women and girls. In pursuit of gender equality, ERA also represents and advocates for the rights of LGBTQI persons at work and at school. Since its founding in 1974, ERA has dedicated itself to advancing gender justice in employment and education through a combination of impact litigation, policy advocacy, public education, and direct legal services. ERA takes an intersectional approach to tackling sexual harassment and violence, pay inequity, and other forms of gender discrimination and inequality, with a focus on centering the experiences and voices of women, girls, and LGBTQI youth of color. Overview of Communications Internship:

ERA's Communications internship program is designed to help enthusiastic, creative, and social media-savvy undergrad students explore career avenues in communications, digital marketing, social media, and content creation in the nonprofit space. We are seeking to host two Communications Interns during the summer.

What You Will Do:

You will learn from, shadow, and collaborate on projects with ERA's Strategic Communications Team. Taking into account your strengths and areas of interest, as well as our team's needs, learning opportunities and project focus may include: social media, digital marketing and trends, graphic design, digital communications data collection and analysis, communications campaign strategy, event planning, presenting information to stakeholders, and/or narrative shifting through community storytelling.

Who Should Apply:

  • Undergraduate students; preference will be given to those planning to pursue a career in nonprofit work, public policy, or public service, who are studying any of the following: communications, marketing, multimedia, public relations, digital media, nonprofit management, humanities, political science, or another area of study supporting the student's plan to enter the nonprofit field.

  • We are happy to consider candidates who are not pursuing an undergraduate degree, as long as they are older than 18 years old and have a strong interest in pursuing a career in nonprofit communications.

What ERA Is Looking For:

A successful intern will offer a blend of creativity, communication and project management skills and practical experience with social media platforms. We'd love to have someone with:

  • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to civil rights, gender equity, and social justice
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Experience with Canva preferred
  • Strong written communication skills are required
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks/projects and work well collaboratively with the Strategic Communications team in a fast-paced environment

Hours, Location, and Compensation:


The internship will run for approximately 10 weeks from Mid-June to Mid-August. The Intern must be willing to work 15 to 20 hours per week.Internship may be fully remote anywhere within the United States or follow a hybrid work schedule.

This is an Unpaid Internship. You will be eligible to receive a monthly allowance toward cellphone expense for the duration of your internship.
