Job Summary:

Carnegie Corporation of New York seeks a dynamic, entrepreneurial expert to serve as Program Officer to lead its grantmaking to prevent nuclear war and crisis escalation as part of the Corporation’s International Peace and Security Program within the International Program, and reporting to the Senior Program Director, International Peace & Security.

The Corporation’s International Program advances knowledge and seeks a more peaceful world through policy-relevant research and outreach, capacity building, dialogues, and public-private partnerships. The Corporation is a leading philanthropic actor on nuclear security issues with four decades of experience in the field.

The Program Officer must possess a deep understanding of U.S. nuclear weapons policy and the broader national and international security landscape, and have relevant experience in government, academia, journalism, or in a nongovernmental organization. Ideal applicants will also have conducted policy-related research, developed and evaluated program strategies, overseen project implementation, effectively worked in teams, and managed against deadlines and budgets.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, refine, support, and advance the Nuclear Security portfolio’s strategy, goals, and objectives through grantmaking and related activities.
  • Elicit, review, assess, and act on proposals, actively assisting in improving their quality. Review proposed budgets, staffing, workplans, and anticipated project outcomes.
  • Manage and monitor grants, conduct appropriate on-site assessments, assess progress, and respond to financial and programmatic issues and reports.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with current and prospective grantees, and relevant experts in the subarea.
  • Maintain a wide breadth and depth of knowledge about current trends, professional practices, and policy issues pertinent to the subprogram area.
  • Provide leadership (e.g., public speaking, written publications, moderating panel discussions) in the Program Officer’s professional field and represent the Corporation, externally, as required.
  • Manage and develop staff, as appropriate.
  • Present to Board of Trustees, as required.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties, including in other areas of the International Program, as required.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field
  • At least seven years of experience in government, academia, journalism, or in a nongovernmental organization.
  • Excellent strategic thinking and planning skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal communication and writing abilities
  • Willingness to travel.
