TITLE: Senior Communications Manager

LINE OF BUSINESS/DIVISION: Marketing and Communications

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Vice President, Marketing and Communications

NUMBER OF POSITIONS REPORTING TO THIS POSITION: 1

LOCATION: Arlington, VA HQ strongly preferred. Remote considered.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Communications Manager is responsible for creating and executing compelling strategic communication strategies, with an emphasis on media relations. The position will also write compelling digital and print content that highlights the Fund’s dual mission of providing environmental and economic solutions. The Senior Media Relations Manager will play an integral role in supporting a growing Marketing & Communications team. An ideal candidate will demonstrate excellence in written and oral communications, a passion for storytelling, highly organized and willing to learn and evolve strategies as the news cycle demands it.

RESPONSIBLITIES & SCOPE

  • Create compelling, innovative media strategies to advance the work of TCF across a range of outlets and publications. Work collaboratively with program and field staff to elevate TCF’s public footprint using tactics including traditional media, events, and social content.
  • Work in partnership with program, field staff and TCF’s Strategic Giving team on priority communications efforts to build support for TCF priorities and to celebrate major conservation accomplishments, demonstrating the Fund's dual mission of environmental health and economic vitality that will resonate with funders, partners and the media.
  • Identify, build and maintain relationships with journalists and editors to advance TCF’s work and experts in key regions and outlets.
  • Track and identify trends across land conservation, clean energy, climate and develop communication and outreach strategies to drive TCF’s solution set across the public conversations happening on these topics.
  • Prepare TCF staff and experts for events and media interviews, developing messaging, talking points, briefing documents and other materials as required. Coach staff on best practices for communicating and developing relationships with reporters, as well as participating in interviews.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree with major coursework in public relations, journalism, marketing, communications or related field or a minimum of 5 years of experience working in media relations. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Experience crafting compelling strategic communication strategies or media outreach strategies.
  • Exceptional writing skills with demonstrated mastery in crafting strategic communication strategies and media outreach opportunities.
  • Excellent verbal communications skills.
  • High degree of organizational skills, with ability to multi-task, prioritize and balance shifting priorities.
  • Demonstrated experience using social media to promote news.
  • Collaborative spirit and ability to work in team settings across cultures and internally within a diverse institution.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
  • Experience working with issues of conservation or related topics.
  • Existing relationships with media representatives and ability to build and cultivate new relationships.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Work is performed primarily in an office setting.
  • Work is sometimes performed under deadlines and quick turnarounds.
  • Travel estimated at 10-15%

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $95,000, and the position is eligible for opportunities to earn performance-based bonus compensation. The Fund offers a highly competitive package of benefits including employer contributions for health care, paid holidays, vacation and personal/sick leave, retirement plan and more. Please note: Salary range provided is an estimate and will be evaluated on an individual basis, taking into consideration the candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities, experience, and education. The final salary offer will be determined accordingly.
