Job Description

Job Title: Instructional Coach

Supervisor: Principal or designee

Hours: 8:00am-5:00pm, Monday through Friday Duration: 12 months


Description: The Instructional Coach serves as an instructional leader, working and communicating on an ongoing basis with the Chief Academic Officer, Principal, faculty and staff, students, parents, and community partners. In addition, attend leadership and board meetings as directed.


Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Curriculum - Ensures that all teachers design effective, rigorous, standards-based instruction units consisting of high-quality, standards-aligned, culturally and linguistically affirming lessons with measurable outcomes.

  • Instruction—Ensures that instructional practices in all settings reflect high expectations regarding content and quality of student thinking and work in alignment with standards. Centers the assets of all learners through culturally and linguistically affirming pedagogy. Strategically differentiates to remove barriers to learning and accommodates diverse learning styles, strengths, interests, and needs.

  • Assessment - Ensures that all teachers 1) build a strong knowledge of a variety of formal and informal methods and assessments to measure student learning, growth, and understanding; 2) leverage assessments through structured cycles of inquiry in order to make necessary adjustments to tiered instruction

  • Coaching and Evaluation—Provides effective and timely supervision and evaluation. Engages in structured and consistent coaching cycles to build educators’ pedagogical knowledge and skills, particularly to support the growth and development of educators who are new to teaching and/or not yet meeting performance expectations.

  • Data-Informed Decision Making - Uses multiple sources of evidence related to student learning, including state, district, and school assessment results and growth data, to inform school and district goals and improve organizational performance, educator effectiveness, and student learning. Supports the planning, facilitation, and implementation of strategic and coherent cycles of inquiry during collaborative learning time, grounded in formal and informal assessments. Supports educators in identifying and documenting students' strengths and needs, developing targeted intervention plans using tiered and evidence-based instructional and behavioral supports, and monitoring student progress (MTSS).

  • In conjunction with the Instructional Leadership Team:

  • Manage school/class schedule

  • Conduct the hiring process for teachers

  • Develop a strategic and differentiated arc of adult learning to build educator knowledge and skill in alignment with the school’s instructional priorities EL Education work plan.

  • Plan and facilitate faculty meetings

  • Oversee summer school planning and execution

  • Manage school-wide assessment system (e.g. portfolio, MCAS, interim assessments,

PowerSchool) including data inquiry cycles and MTSS infrastructure.

  • Collaborate with EL Education School Designer

  • Community Engagement and Stewardship

  • a proven ability to build community, inspire and lead teams, whether adults or students, to achieve ambitious learning and teaching goals; an understanding of the principles of high-quality adult learning

  • successful experience coaching teachers, documenting curricula, and supporting strong instructional practice

  • facility utilizing data to drive improvement

  • an understanding of child and adolescent development and demonstrated commitment to implementing best practices in K1-8

  • established habits of creative collaboration

  • an abiding sense of urgency

  • licensure qualifications

  • a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred

  • at least 5 years of relevant experience

  • Additional duties assigned by supervisor
