About Prefect:

Prefect, the open-source data workflow automation platform. Our remote first company is singularly focused on this vision, and every team member directly contributes to its advancement. Every role solves a problem, and everyone can see exactly how their work helps achieve our mission.

To that end, we've carefully created a supportive, high-performance culture - the operating system of our company - that empowers our team to do the best work of their careers and achieve their personal and professional aspirations.

We are looking for folks who want to join a remote-first team #LI-Remote to build an equally amazing company and product. In deciding whether to apply for a role at Prefect, consider whether your values align with ours.

Role Summary:

We're looking for a Principal Product Designer to lead Product Design at Prefect. You will join a multi-disciplinary team whose shared mission is to enable Data and Machine Learning Engineers to build, observe, and react to data intensive workflows.

As Prefect's senior-most Product Designer, you will define what Product Design means at Prefect. You will determine which responsibilities to exercise complete ownership of and which to influence through shared ownership. You will establish cross-functional relationships in the product development process, collaborating with Staff Engineers, Principal Product Managers, Executives and Founders.

You will report to our VP of Product, Bill.

What You'll Do:
  • Exercise ownership of your work end-to-end, see it from problem definition through prototyping, development, and deployment to production
  • Connect directly with customers and the people who support them, including Prefect's Support and Sales Engineering teams
  • Explore solutions, create prototypes, and dive into user research and feedback to identify points of friction and opportunities for improvement
  • Strive to simplify complex feature sets down to the right balance of flexibility, power, and ease of use
  • Build buy-in for your designs with Product Managers, Engineers, and Executives by showing your work and the data to support your decisions
  • Give and receive feedback well, supporting and improving the work of your colleagues as well as your own
  • Create systems and processes that encourage design best practices
Your Qualifications:
  • 7+ years of experience in Product Design or comparable focus such as User Experience Design (UX), Information Architecture (IA), Interaction Design (IXD), or Experience Architecture (XA)
  • 2+ years of experience as one of the first design hires at a startup
  • 2+ years of experience designing developer tools, data analysis tools, or data-intensive applications
  • Experienced in leading complex design projects and creating high-quality design solutions
  • Experience iterating rapidly, contributing to feedback cycles, and experimentation, especially in Figma
  • Enthusiastic about understanding customer needs, and assessing and incorporating their feedback
  • Experience thinking about entire systems, with the vision to design the big picture and the tactical ability to break it down so that engineering can succeed in building it incrementally
  • Experience with UX and interaction design fundamentals with a flair for visual appeal
  • Basic proficiency in navigating linux-based operating systems through terminal commands
  • Basic proficiency in Python or a similar scripting language
Portfolio Requirements:
  • You must have a portfolio with the following requirements:
  • Must contain designs that have been released open source or commercially
  • Must demonstrate system-wide thinking, breadth, and depth in UX and interaction design skills
  • Must describe your design process and show examples of the progressive evolution of your designs. We're interested in use cases that inform us of the business problem you were trying to solve, the constraints and assumptions you needed to work within, where the design started, and your iterations leading to the final design
  • Your portfolio should inform us of how your designs furthered company goals while at the same time meeting user needs
  • If your portfolio is password protected, you must provide the password at application time
What You'll Get in Return:
