BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the general guidance of the COO and staff, the Intern will support projects in areas of key strategic focus for Empire State Development including semiconductor industry growth, marketing and outreach, regional technology cluster development, and more. The Intern will work closely with Executive staff to identify areas of specific interest and undertake related projects which may include research, writing briefing materials, supporting stakeholder management, and more. Executive staff will also ensure the Intern is exposed to a broad range of agency operations initiatives, with the goal of increasing their understanding of and experience with State government processes and functions.


WORK PERFORMED:

  • Research and Preparation of Briefing Materials: supporting Executive staff through research and preparation of materials on various topics and issue areas.
  • Stakeholder Management: interact with stakeholders from nonprofit, academia, government, and industry in service of project goals in strategic focus areas. Build and maintain relationships with partners, consortia working in strategic growth areas, and support Executive staff in collaborative efforts.
  • Marketing and Outreach: develop strategies and materials to support ongoing marketing and outreach efforts in key strategic industries.
  • Agency Operations: assume agency-wide responsibilities in partnership with Executive staff to drive effective and efficient operations and learn the full scope of ESD’s work.
  • Other work as assigned and mutually identified in partnership with Executive staff.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education level required: 4-year degree and enrolled in a Master’s program

Knowledge required:

  1. Strong written and oral communication skills
  2. Ability to work collaboratively and drive work independently as needed.
  3. Proficiency in Microsoft suite
  4. Willingness to adjust to shifting priorities and deadlines.
  5. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker who is willing to learn quickly as part of a dynamic team. Prior knowledge of economic development, community development, finance, business, or government is not required but preferred. Additionally, Business Admin, Economics, Public Policy/Admin, and Urban Planning students are strongly preferred. Most importantly, candidates should be able to articulate why they are interested in public service and willing to work hard in a fast-paced and changing environment.
