With grant funds from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the NYC Health Department is undertaking a new initiative that will meet critical infrastructure needs and make possible strategic investments that will have lasting effects on public health. Investments and improvements through this initiative will help modernize the Health Department’s foundational capabilities and data infrastructure, enabling it to partner in complex health and health care environments and, in turn, support better public health outcomes, including COVID-19. This initiative supports larger efforts to rebalance investments in public health and more equitably serve communities and populations.

The selected candidate will be an employee of Public Health Solutions, a nonprofit organization which is the fiscal and administrative manager of the grant but will work be supervised by the Health Department. This is a grant-funded position ending in November 2027.

Job description:

The Bureau of Communications is seeking a Managing Editor, Website to join its Digital Communications unit. This role will oversee the day-to-day maintenance and administration of the Health Department’s website (NYC.gov/health) and other digital properties. The communications unit is housed within the Health Department's Office of External Affairs. Among other communications responsibilities for the Health Department, the digital unit manages external-facing social media content and websites. This unit also ensures that the websites are accessible to New Yorkers with disabilities and limited English proficiency.

Duties:

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Train, supervise and mentor three web team staff members, create editorial plans for NYC.gov/health and assign work based on agency priorities.
  • Write and edit high-profile materials on important public health issues for the public, medical professionals, and other public health stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with agency programs (subject-matter experts) to develop website content plans and delegate editorial projects to staff.
  • Ensure that the language used online is consistent with agency mission, policies, and goals.
  • Tailor website materials to a target audience of diverse New Yorkers, ensuring content is written in plain language.
  • Ensure that all website content meets standards of editorial excellence and adheres to plain language and digital accessibility best practices, agency style standards and applicable federal and local laws.
  • Implement UI/UX best practices to make content improvements, while working within the NYC.gov template and infrastructure.
  • Work on urgent/emergency materials as needed.

Qualifications:

  • A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with a concentration in English, journalism, communications, public relations, or a related field, plus five (5) years of full-time paid experience in public relations, journalism or advertising that includes experience with digital content creation and management.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience leading an editorial team.
  • Salary - $80,000 - $80,000

Additional Desired Qualities:

  • Experience with an enterprise CMS, plus basic HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
  • Extensive editorial expertise, including editing to an internal style guide and for plain language.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to manage and report complex information.
  • Desire to grow professionally, develop new skills and willingness to work outside of comfort zone.
  • Experience working with the public health sector and coordinating projects involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to prioritize and work in fast-paced environment with hard deadlines.

Additional Information:

  • This is a temporary grant-funded position ending in November 2027.
  • This individual must reside in the tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT) by their confirmed start date.
  • Preference may be given to individuals residing in New York City (5 boroughs) or surrounding New York State counties.
  • This individual will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies.
