SUMMARY

The Engineering Services Director collaborates closely with the Practice Leader and Business Line President of the Governmental Services Business Line to drive strategic outcomes and operational initiatives within the Practice. This role involves overseeing Engineering Services and Operations, managing a team of Group Leaders, and handling the financial aspects of related services. The Engineering Services Director is accountable for business development, market assessment, client relationship maintenance, and fostering potential client contacts. Emphasis is placed on strategic business development, with active engagement in selling and managing work. Collaboration with other Directors, Group Leaders, and Managers is essential to formulate and execute staff development plans, ensuring that staff possesses the necessary skills and competencies to meet Practice needs. The Director may also manage individual projects/contracts and participate in Business Lines and/or other client activities as required, particularly when technical expertise or client relationships are critical to project success. This position is open to candidates based in CO, CA, IL, or TX.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Operations

  • Based on the strategic and business plans of the Practice, forecast overall project management and project/contract/service delivery aspects of Engineering Services and the needs of the Practice.
  • In coordination with Directors, Group Leaders, and Group Managers, establish group goals
  • Monitor Engineering performance. Work with the Operations Director to recommend and implement corrective actions to ensure the achievement of the Practice financial plan and performance goals.
  • Collaborate with the other Practice Leaders, Directors, and Group Leaders to expand the Business Line footprint.
  • Other operational duties as assigned by the Practice Leader.
  • Manage the financial aspects of the services to achieve the desired results for sales, revenues and profit margins.

Strategic Management

  • Meets and exceeds Key Performance Indicators: Engineering Gross Margin, Engineering Sales, Revenues, Utilization, Revenue Factor, Accounts Receivable/Unbilled, variances & others as identified by the Practice Leader.
  • Collaborates with Practice Leader and Operations Director to develop annual Engineering Services budget. Accountable for managing top and bottom-line revenue growth. Manages portion of practice line budget.
  • Participates in Business Line related leadership meetings.

Enhancing Employee Development

  • In concert with the Practice Leader, Directors, Group Leaders, and Managers, identify the skills and competencies required for staff to meet client needs.
  • Works with the Group Leaders and Human Resources to recruit, hire, and retain staff ensuring the appropriate mix of skills and competencies to meet the needs of the Practice.
  • Oversees performance management and development for the Practice staff. In coordination with other Directors, Group Leaders, establishes team goals. Provides regular feedback and works with Group Leaders to achieve group goals. Coordinates with Group Leaders to conduct effective ongoing performance and development discussions and to conduct effective Mid-Year and Annual Performance Evaluations.
  • In conjunction with Directors and Group Leaders, mentors and coaches Engineering Services staff.
  • Works with the Engineering Services staff in the creation and completion of their individual development plans. Ensures staff members fulfill annual and periodic professional development requirements.
  • Regularly conducts meetings with the Engineering Services staff to discuss resources and technical issues.

Marketing, Business Development and Sales

  • Collaborates with Practice Leader to establish regional sales goals by client and prospect, develops and reviews Client Account Plans in support of those goals, and monitors the implementation of those plans.
  • Oversees the business development process for a defined region, identifies/qualifies clients, and makes go/no go decisions with the Practice Leader.
  • Builds and maintains client relationships to ensure quality service retention and repeat business.
  • Continues the creation, development, and nurturing of key strategic client and partner relationships, with the goal of leading the competition in market position.
  • Wins new business opportunities, projects, and clients to achieve sales goals.
  • Supports business development efforts of other Business Lines.
  • The Engineering Services Director will assist in the development and review of responses to Statements of Qualifications (SOQ) and Requests for Proposals (RFP) and participate in interviews as appropriate.
  • Prepares/assists with client proposals and plays a key role in the delivery of those proposals to clients.
  • Cross-markets other Business Line services as appropriate to their clients.

Discipline Leadership

  • Effectively provide strategic direction, support, development, and feedback to Business Line employees in their respective disciplines.
  • Promotes good stewardship and sustains long-term results by supporting people development initiatives, succession planning, and knowledge sharing.
  • Collaborates with other Directors and other Practices in the best interest of HR Green and our staff
  • Participates in activities of local professional or civic organizations to establish, enhance, and maintain the HR Green brand in the marketplace.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in related engineering or technical discipline.
  • Has 10+ years of experience in a Director/Leadership role at a civil engineering firm or local government that includes people management and business development responsibilities as appropriate
  • Strong track record of winning work opportunities
  • Demonstrates success in developing, planning, and executing strategic market initiatives
  • Communicates masterfully, possesses people management experience and outstanding conflict resolution skills
  • Has a positive industry reputation such that they are well known in professional organizations and within the industry regional marketplace
  • Demonstrates successful networking, collaboration, and partnering skills within a regional area and across internal practices
  • Exhibits a pattern of exceeding expectations, KPI targets, and project deliverables
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills
  • Exhibits proficient writing skills and fundamental computer skills/knowledge.

RELATIONSHIP TO OTHERS

Reports to the Practice Leader and collaborates with other Practice Leaders and Directors as appropriate. Managers Group Leaders within the discipline.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES

Current licensure as a professional civil engineer or a respective professional discipline is required. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle.

Compensation

$166,000 - $248,000

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in accordance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act and California’s SB 1162. The final agreed-upon compensation is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, skills, prior work experience, competencies, and geographic work location. The total annual compensation package may consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate, after a qualifying period, in our performance and discretionary incentive bonus program(s).
