Indiana Lawyer editor

IBJ Media
Indianapolis, IN
  • Full-Time
Job Description

Locally owned IBJ Media is looking for an editor to lead and reshape Indiana Lawyer, an every-other-week print publication with a strong daily web presence, daily newsletter and every-other-week podcast that aim to provide essential news to the state’s legal community.

Since 1990, Indiana Lawyer has been the go-to place for daily news about appellate court decisions and a print publication with stories about larger legal issues plus opinion from legal experts and industry leaders. But we’re ready to expand our mission to include more coverage about the business aspects of running a law firm and the role attorneys play in helping businesses navigate the complex legal landscape. And we increasingly see Indiana Lawyer as part of a larger newsroom that also includes reporters and editors from Indianapolis Business Journal and Inside INdiana Business.

We’re looking for an editor who can lead our three-reporter team to develop impactful stories about the movers and shakers in Indiana’s legal community, write about big court wins and damage awards, and offer lawyers insight on the business opportunities and challenges facing their law practices.

In addition, Indiana Lawyer’s next editor must be able to understand legal writing and legalese but also translate it into language that is understood by a broader audience—business executives, elected officials, not-for-profit leaders and others who are impacted by the law and legal issues and work with attorneys to address them.

IBJ Media — the parent company of Indiana Lawyer, Inside INdiana Business and Indianapolis Business Journal — welcomes applications from experienced journalists as well as nontraditional candidates with experience in law and an interest in writing and the media.

A strong candidate for the job will have at least three years of editing experience or management experience in another area of law or writing.

Experience with legal issues and legal language—either through journalism or the legal industry—will be prioritized as we evaluate candidates. But experienced editors looking to try working in a new coverage area will also be considered.

Strong candidates will also be able to:

  • Drive change and motivate others to be excited about the vision.
  • Help reporters develop new sources and write stories in areas they haven’t covered previously.
  • Think creatively about business opportunities such as events.
  • Appreciate Indiana Lawyer as a journalistic enterprise but as part of a larger business.

Indiana Lawyer offers a chance to work in an affordable capital city with a metro area population of more than 2 million people but in a smaller newsroom with plenty of opportunity to make a big impact. In Indianapolis, you will find professional sports, world class museums and performance venues, and neighborhoods filled with great restaurants, bike trails and parks.

Our offices are located on the city’s historic Monument Circle — the literal and figurative heart of Indianapolis, just blocks from stadiums, the Statehouse, the Indianapolis City Market and much more. Our commutes are short, our public transportation is expanding and our city and suburbs are thriving.

Applicants should send a resume, examples of work product and a cover letter to Indiana Lawyer Publisher Nate Feltman (nfeltman@ibj.com), Interim Indiana Lawyer Editor Greg Weaver (gweaver@ibj.com) and IBJ Editor Lesley Weidenbener (lweidenbener@ibj.com). Please use "Indiana Lawyer editor" in the subject line.

IBJ Media is an equal opportunity employer and our goal is to develop a diverse pool of candidates for this and all positions.
