Position Description

The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for providing broad direction and management of the School's comprehensive, integrated communications program that supports the vision, mission, core values, and strategic goals of The Hill School. The program focuses on competitive positioning of the School through coordinated brand management, increased visibility and awareness, and enhancements in image and reputation.

The Director will oversee a team that executes the School's strategic marketing and communications efforts. An essential part of the Director's job is building trusting relationships across all departments-especially the Admission Office, Office of Institutional Giving, and the Athletics and Arts Departments. Working together, they will evaluate Hill's brand, develop strategies for achieving broader goals, and create effective communications across all constituencies that will ensure the School's place in national and international markets.

The Director reports to the Office of the Head of School, is a member of the Head of School's Advisory Team and advises on various standing and ad hoc committees.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic and passionate self-starter with excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience and demonstrated success working with diverse student communities is preferred, but not required. This candidate will have at least a bachelor's degree, preferably in marketing, communications, print or electronic journalism, or the equivalent, as well as:

  • A minimum of seven years of marketing, communications, or public relations experience.
  • Familiarity with or direct experience in independent schools or colleges/universities.
  • Familiarity with website content management systems (e.g. Finalsite/Blackbaud), website analytic tools, and inbound marketing tactics.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in graphic design; familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Project management and financial acumen with the ability to handle multiple priorities and demands.
  • Expertise in key digital media disciplines/tools with an understanding of integrated media campaigns and social media.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a staff of communications and creative professionals.
  • Oversee the School's well-established reputation, ensuring the visual identity and key messaging are consistent with the mission and is of the highest quality.
  • Set annual and long-term strategic goals and manage an integrated marketing and communications approach for school-wide initiatives.
  • Provide counsel to and partner with School leadership on creation, revision, and implementation of policies and procedures as it relates to crisis communications and operations.
  • Collaborate with the Admission and Institutional Giving Offices to ensure all marketing and communications materials reflect the School's mission and story.
  • Partner with the Admission Office to organize the acceptance, enrollment, and arrival sequence.
  • Partner with the Office of Institutional Giving to develop and execute tactics to support donor engagement, stewardship, fundraising initiatives, and communicating the School's strategic vision.
  • Partner with the Athletics, Arts, and Academics Departments to ensure uniformity of brand and quality news sharing as well as storytelling, etc.
  • Partner with the staff of Hobart's Run, Hill's neighborhood initiative leadership, to cultivate and maintain relationships with key external civic and business constituencies.
  • Capitalize on best uses of website, digital technology, social media, and print.
  • Initiate, oversee, and apply market research as appropriate.
  • Manage the marketing, publications, and website budgets.
  • Maintain and monitor the school-wide calendar of communications, and the efficiency, effectiveness, and impact of marketing initiatives including social media, parent and alumni communications, newsletters, Hill Ties, fundraising and stewardship materials, event announcements, invitations, and other emerging needs.
  • Work with key administrators to help produce outstanding experiences for all constituencies at school events, including, but not limited to Opening Days, Convocation, Family Weekend, Lawrenceville Weekend, Revisit Days, Commencement, Alumni and Reunion Weekend.
