THE LOCATION

Houston - flexible hybrid, mostly remote but must live in Texas and preferably within occasional commuting distance to our office

THE ORGANIZATION

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is the largest individual-member organization serving managers, engineers, scientists, and other professionals worldwide in the upstream segment of the oil and gas industry. SPE is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization with members and operations around the world.

THE TEAM

This position is dedicated to SPE’s digital magazine and publication websites. The Magazine group is an essential part of the larger Communications Group which focuses on one of SPE’s key missions to collect, disseminate, and exchange technical knowledge related to the oil and gas exploration and production industry through magazines, technical journals, conference proceedings, and maintaining a multi-society online library of technical literature for the oil and gas industry.

THE OPPORTUNITY

As a Senior Technology Editor, you will play a critical role in shaping the content and direction of our flagship publication, the Journal of Petroleum Technology (JPT), now celebrating more than 75 years! As an ambitious content creator with at least 8 years of experience, you will contribute to the highest quality of articles related to petroleum engineering technology and practices. This role requires an understanding of the upstream oil and gas industry, technological advancements, and the ability to communicate complex technical information in a clear and engaging manner.

THE IMPACT YOU WILL MAKE IN THIS ROLE

• Write articles for online publications as assigned, primarily the Journal of Petroleum Technology (JPT).
• Write in-depth, long-form articles for monthly issues of JPT and shorter-form articles several times weekly for its corresponding website.
• Stay informed about the latest developments, trends, and practices in petroleum engineering technology, actively seeking out topics suitable for publication.
• Create content through interviews with subject-matter experts and thorough research including technical papers, reports, case studies, and participation in industry conferences.
• Collaborate with editorial team.
• Adhere to project schedules and deadlines.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERTISE

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, or related area and minimum 8 years of oil and gas industry-related experience
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Excellent interviewing, reporting, editing, and writing skills
• Ability to work effectively with publications staff, SPE members, industry contacts
• Knowledge of the upstream oil and gas industry required
• Ability to read and learn from technical and technology-related sources
• Able to travel as needed

THE BONUS SKILLS

• Experience with content management systems (preferred)
• Prior experience working for a B2B magazine and/or newspaper (preferred)
• Experience in a global or multi-cultural organization, with an understanding of cultural differences in communication style (preferred)
