JOB TITLE: Director of Marking & Communication
DEPARTMENT / CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time / Salaried / Non-Union
REPORTS TO: Chief Philanthropy Officer
SUPERVISES: Marketing Coordinator & Digital Marketing Manager
SALARY: $88,623 - $93,836

JOB SUMMARY: The Director of Marketing and Communications shapes the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County's (HSTPC) public image and drives its strategic messaging. This leadership role oversees content creation, media relations, crisis communications, and partnership development to elevate the organization's mission

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & FUNCTIONS:

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates the communications plan and programs across the organization's internal and external audiences in cooperation with the organization's goals and objectives.
  • Directs the development of a comprehensive communication vision for the organization through consultation with internal and external stakeholders that improves communication and engagement with organization and customers.
  • Discerns communication opportunities in order to design and execute appropriate strategies to address them.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive marketing and communications strategies to increase awareness, engagement, and support for HSTPC.
  • Lead and mentor a content team, ensuring the timely production of high-quality materials across print, web, social media, and internal channels.
  • Build and maintain strong media relationships, proactively seeking positive coverage and skillfully managing crisis communications.
  • Collaborate with leadership and across departments to craft compelling messaging, handle media inquiries, provide executive communications support, and align marketing efforts with organizational goals.
  • Identify, cultivate, and manage corporate and media partnerships that enhance visibility, fundraising, and community impact.
  • Oversee the production of key communications materials, including the monthly e-newsletter, website content, adoption stories, and the Annual Report.
  • Provides administrative support for developing, tracking, and revising department budgets.
  • Assist with fundraising projects and special events as needed.
  • Expertise in crafting persuasive written materials, presentations, and social media content.
  • Proven ability to manage a content team and workflow, ensuring deadlines and quality standards are met.
  • Strong media relations acumen, with the ability to build relationships and generate positive coverage.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate across all levels of the organization.
  • Extensive experience in public relations and strategic communication, with a demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective PR strategies.
  • Experience leading marketing campaigns, coordinating with multiple vendors, and managing a wide range of promotional materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects effectively, with a focus on organizational skills, timely completion, and cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite to produce visually engaging content.
  • Ability to adapt quickly in a fast-paced environment, prioritizing tasks and managing multiple projects simultaneously.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in communications, marketing, or a related field, demonstrating increasing responsibility.
  • Previous people management experience preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience in a non-profit or animal welfare setting is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in WordPress, Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office, Constant Contact, Hootsuite, and other standard marketing tools.
  • Finalist applicants must satisfactorily complete a pre-employment background check.
