AARP's Integrated Communications and Marketing (ICM) Group includes Membership, Content and Editorial, Customer Experience, External Relations, Brand Strategy and Strategic Communications. Across paid, earned, shared and owned channels, ICM manages AARP's reputation, drives engagement and member growth, and showcases AARP's mission and value through one, integrated voice.

The Writer/Editor/Producer develops and implements written or scripted content for publications, books, and/or digital platforms. Partners with both internal and external teams on content production and publication. Ensures format and quality of materials for dissemination are consistent with established publishing policies. Collaborates with management to identify opportunities to streamline editorial processes and to develop new procedures that support the business unit/department.

Responsibilities

  • Works with other team members, including writers, editors, project managers, subject-matter experts, marketing and outreach directors, and senior executives to create and deliver timely, high quality, and relevant content.
  • Educates and coaches staff on writing best practices, identifies ways to improve the flow of materials, and advises staff on content pieces.
  • Manages team of external freelance writers, editors, and graphic designers.
  • Recommends process improvements related to content development, editing, and delivery of publications/written materials.
  • Writes and edits content for internal and external audiences and ensures that all content is consistent in voice, tone, and style, and that messaging is customized and aligned for the intended audience.
  • Develops timelines to meet project commitments and to ensure deliverables from across the organization and external partners are on time.
  • Partners with team members to identify success stories. Contributes ideas and content for monthly content and storytelling plans. Identifies and shares opportunities for public and media relations and thought leadership initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, or Communications and 6+ years of related experience.
  • Focused knowledge in one or several of the areas of health, money, entertainment, travel, relationships, style content is desirable.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills and a proven track record creating journalism of the highest standards required in multiple formats and platforms.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current best practices in print and online formats.
  • Demonstrated skill in packaging content for print and online formats.
  • Is able to work at a fast pace and high level and is focused on completing assignments and meeting deadlines.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exhibit respect and understanding of others to maintain professional relationships.
  • Independent judgement and discretion requiring the employee to compare and evaluate various courses of conduct and make a decision (or recommend a decision to be made) after various possibilities have been considered.
  • In office/open office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise.

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
