Assistant/Associate Professor - School of Media and Journalism

The Kent State University School of Media and Journalism invites applications for an assistant (tenure-track) or associate professor (tenured) position with a start date of August 2023.

We highly value candidates who will advance the school’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEI&B) through their research/creative activity, teaching, and student-centered engagement. Diversity involves recognizing the value of differences and the inclusion of all members of the community. This is one of several core values we embrace as we strive for a culturally diverse student body, faculty and staff that reflect the multicultural nature of Ohio, the nation, and our world. Candidates who demonstrate a commitment to best practices in DEI&B are strongly encouraged to apply.

Successful candidates may demonstrate expertise in any of the school’s areas, but we are particularly interested in candidates whose research/creative activity and/or professional experience align with one or more of the following areas: journalism, visual media (especially video and video production), digital storytelling, data, strategic communication or media law.

The School of Media and Journalism is part of the College of Communication and Information (CCI), a unique collaboration that brings together five distinct but interrelated fields of study – media, design, communication, information, and digital technologies. CCI faculty are creative, dynamic, and interdisciplinary, and we seek candidates that fully embrace the opportunities that the College offers for collaboration among our fields. MDJ houses four undergraduate areas of study (advertising, digital media production, journalism, and public relations) and graduate programs focused on media and journalism and journalism education. MDJ embraces the same interdisciplinarity and collaborative spirit in our approach to research, creative activity, and teaching. We are committed to providing professional learning experiences for our students. MDJ is home to 10 student media outlets, including five magazines and the award-winning, student-led KentWired and TV2, as well as professional student organizations, and NewsLab, an experiential and collaborative news commons that links students with professional media partners throughout Northeast Ohio.

Kent State University is committed to the creation and nurturing of a diverse community of individuals through inclusive excellence. Founded in 1910, the university is the third largest in Ohio, with an enrollment of approximately 24,000 students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Kent is a small but vibrant college town close to the cultural, dining, and professional sports activities of Cleveland, Akron, and other Northeast Ohio cities, along with the recreational opportunities of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the many lakes in the region.

The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education has awarded Kent State University the esteemed R1 status for research, which is the highest recognition that doctoral universities can receive.

The Chronicle of Higher Education identifies Kent State as one of the Great Colleges to Work For, and U.S. News & World Report ranks Kent State in the coveted top-tier of Best Colleges.

Kent State University and the School of Media and Journalism are committed to fostering and maintaining an inclusive culture that respects the rights and dignity of each individual, without regard to race, color, national origin, ancestry, caste, religious creed, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, gender expression, height, weight, marital status, disability, medical condition, age, or veteran status.

For priority consideration, applications should be submitted by December 31, 2022, but the search will stay open until the position is filled. Specific questions may be addressed to one of the Search Committee Co-Chairs, Jacqueline Marino at [email protected], or Stefanie Moore at [email protected].
