Executive Editor, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, a statewide newspaper, is looking for a visionary Executive Editor to lead and inspire its 100-person newsroom. This position demands a creative leader who will champion digital and print storytelling innovation and embrace various multimedia formats, new platforms and a subscriber-first mindset. They will focus on providing impactful coverage that strengthens our connection with the community.
We are seeking an individual who is enthusiastic about experimentation and adaptability, continually exploring new content formats and storytelling methods to address the changing needs of our subscribers. The ideal candidate will use data, analytics and market insights to broaden and diversify our audience. They will find a balance between engaging younger, digitally savvy audiences and maintaining a commitment to our loyal, long-term subscribers.
The Executive Editor will be expected to uphold the highest journalistic standards, including impartiality, objectivity and a clear distinction between news and opinion.
As a prominent representative of local journalism, you will advocate for the company within the community and serve as a trusted voice in public dialogue. The Executive Editor will play a crucial role in advancing our philanthropic initiatives. The ideal candidate will take on a public-facing role and should regularly engage with subscribers, donors and potential subscribers and donors. This engagement will occur through community events, listening sessions, partnerships and public forums to ensure our journalism remains relevant, responsive and trusted.
The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker, a compelling communicator and a seasoned newsroom leader who thrives in a mission-centric environment. A strong dedication to local journalism and its vital role in a healthy democracy is essential.
Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or a related field, along with at least five years of solid experience in daily newspaper operations. Proven writing and editing abilities are required, as well as familiarity with the technology and software utilized in newspaper production.
