ASSISTANT PROFESSOR JOURNALISM MEDIA INNOVATION
The Journalism Department in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, CA, seeks a full-time, academic-year, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Media Innovation, to begin September 11, 2023.
The ideal candidate will bring inclusive teaching practices and a relevant research agenda aligned with the department’s new media innovation concentration which focuses on developments driving modern media organizations: design thinking, product management, audience engagement and the creation of more equitable, inclusive journalism. The concentration could be described as half focused on telling stories in innovative ways and half focused on designing new media products and business models. Both stem from a desire to serve audience needs and to sustain the foundations of good journalism. The candidate must have relevant professional experience related to media innovation along with experience working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and equitable environment that supports the college’s goals of ensuring that graduates are prepared to work successfully with others in multicultural and global contexts through oral, written and visual communication.
Cal Poly is primarily a teaching university. Our faculty are expected to balance equitable and inclusive teaching practices with an active program of research/professional development and participation in service activities at the department and college/university level. The typical teaching load is 12 units (three courses) per quarter, with a reduction in course load in each of the first two years to help establish an active program of research and professional development. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The initial appointment is for two years, subject to renewal. An earned master’s degree in Journalism, Mass Communication, or a closely related field by date of appointment is required.
Department and University Information
Currently the Journalism Department, in the College of Liberal Arts, has six full-time faculty members and five lecturers, most of whom teach nearly full-time. The department serves approximately 280 undergraduate students in digital, print and broadcast journalism, public relations and advertising. The department’s digital-first student news organization, student-run public relations agency, campus radio and TV stations and interdisciplinary collaborations provide laboratories for elevating community engagement and knowledge as well as opportunities for research.
