Senior Editor, Opinion
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Chronicle of Philanthropy, the premier publication covering the $6 trillion world of nonprofits and foundations, is seeking a senior editor for its expanded opinion section. This new position is part of overall plans to double the size of the Chronicle’s newsroom in the next five years, including a larger opinions team that will oversee one of the most widely read parts of the publication.
The senior editor for opinion will work in partnership with the current opinion editor to build a commons where ideas are debated, and often unheard voices can express views on issues critical to the nonprofit world. In 2022, the Chronicle announced an extensive growth plan and raised more than $6 million to become an independent nonprofit organization. A robust opinion section that holds the field accountable and helps it perform more effectively, is central to those plans.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with authors or those representing them to edit commissioned op-eds, essays, and letters to the editor.
- Shepherd op-eds through the entire editing process until publication, including writing headlines, addressing copy editing questions, and advising the visuals department on art elements for each piece.
- Respond to submissions to the opinion section by either rejecting or accepting them in a timely manner.
- Identify, commission, and cultivate new writers by keeping up with trends and ideas in the philanthropic and nonprofit field, including reading other publications and monitoring social media.
- Develop and help oversee potential new products, including debate style opinion features, videos, and podcasts.
- Help prepare a bi-weekly opinion newsletter.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years of experience in journalism or related fields.
- Experience editing for argument, clarity, and flow, including editing and/or writing opinion pieces.
- An understanding of and interest in the philanthropic and nonprofit world covered by the Chronicle.
- Demonstrated ability to commission, work with, and edit pieces from writers with a range of abilities, views, perspectives, and backgrounds.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Strong editing, writing, and verbal communications skills.
- Knowledge of issues important to the philanthropy and nonprofit field.
- Strong collaborative and teamwork skills.
- Attention to detail.
The salary for this position is $85,000-$100,000, commensurate with experience.
This is a fully remote position with the option, if desired, of working at the Chronicle’s Washington, D.C. office.
