Israel-Based Correspondent
The Forward, America’s leading Jewish news organization, seeks an intrepid, creative journalist to cover the Israel-Hamas war and its aftermath from Jerusalem and the region for six months.
We need a self-starter with a gift for finding distinctive, memorable stories. An empathic reporter able to navigate complexity on the ground and explain it with nuance to our broad and diverse audience. A conversational and confident writer who comes at every situation from a place of curiosity.
Experience living and reporting in the Middle East are a plus, as are multimedia skills and fluency in Hebrew or Arabic. Passion for the storyline, and political independence regarding it, are musts, along with an entrepreneurial spirit, collegial attitude, and sense of humor. Applicants need not be Jewish.
This is a full-time, six-month temporary staff position, with further engagement possible depending on editorial needs. Compensation will be competitive based on experience. This journalist will work directly with the Forward’s editor-in-chief, Jodi Rudoren, a veteran reporter, editor and digital innovator and former Jerusalem bureau chief of The New York Times.
The Forward is a reader-supported nonprofit newsroom that reaches more than 1 million people each month across platforms. Founded in 1897 as a Yiddish, Socialist broadsheet, the Forward has been digital-only since 2019, and is politically independent, providing a broad platform for civil discourse on issues that divide our communities.
Candidates should send a one-page cover letter pitching themselves for the role, along with a resume and five clips, to editorial@forward.com, subject line: Israel-based correspondent.
The Forward is an equal opportunity employer. We strongly encourage applications from all qualified individuals regardless of their race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age, disability or genetic information or any other status protected by law.
