The successful applicant for this position will produce a body of news and feature stories, and longer form accountability, investigative and narrative pieces that address climate change and all of its impacts on heat, extreme weather, flooding, drought and the environment, especially air and groundwater pollution and land use issues related to fossil fuels, mining and coal ash. Issues of particular interest include Superfund and coal ash remediation, water infrastructure, renewable energy, regulators and utilities, pipelines, and environmental justice. This journalist will be based in, and travel extensively throughout, Alabama, from their home within the state. Inside Climate News is committed to diversity and inclusion in our newsroom. Job Summary

This is a demanding position that requires sound beat and investigative skills,  as well as advanced writing craft. A facility with government documents and court records is expected, as is a demonstrated commitment to reporting on the environment and environmental justice. Basic data analysis skills would be considered a significant plus, as would fluency in Spanish or other languages.

This reporter will need to be a self-starter and team player who works with a high degree of collegiality. These additional qualifications, or their equivalents, are essential:

  • A minimum of three to five years reporting and writing experience, which can include experience gained as a student journalist, with clips that demonstrate a depth of knowledge about climate change and all its many tangents and impacts on the environment, including environmental justice. More experience would be a plus; candidates with slightly less experience but a demonstrated fire in the belly for covering climate and the environment will be considered.
  • Knowledge of science, climate change and the environment.
  • A solid work ethic, a collaborative attitude, a commitment to accountability reporting and a demonstrated passion for journalism in general, and climate and environment public reporting in particular. Collegiality, teamwork and kindness are hallmarks of our newsroom.
  • The ability to bring diverse, unique insights to our coverage of climate change, the environment and environmental justice.
