BEAT: Latino and Mayan immigrant communities (Catchlight photojournalism partnership)
Position:
This photojournalist produces groundbreaking and empathetic journalism that is sourced in community engagement within the Bay Area’s Latino and Mayan immigrant communities. They help us amplify the stories shared by our community and document the individuals behind those stories, producing powerful portraits and photo essays as a part of our original reporting, and designing creative opportunities for in-person engagement and participatory storytelling.
Salary and Benefits:
$62,000-$85,000 depending on skills and experience
- 100% paid medical insurance premiums for employee if desired
- Paid sick leave accrued at a rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked, up to a max 72 hours/year
- PTO accrued at a starting rate of .05 hours per hour worked up to a max of 120 hours. (This equates to 13 days in your first year.) Each year with El Tímpano, the accrual rate increases by .008 hours per hour worked.
- 14 paid holidays and a 1-week paid holiday office closure between Christmas and New Year
- A Roth IRA account (we do not pay into it, but set it up)
- A monthly home office/tech stipend and an El Tímpano laptop if desired
- Professional development opportunities

About the Publication: El Tímpano—Spanish for “eardrum”—informs, engages and amplifies the voices of Latino and Mayan immigrants of Oakland and the wider Bay Area. Through innovative approaches to local journalism and civic engagement, El Tímpano surfaces community members’ stories and questions on local and national issues, provides news and information relevant to their needs, and investigates the concerns they bring to our attention.
