Digital Forensics Editor
This is a locally recruited full-time position in Prague on a one-year assignment initially with the possibility of extension for an open-ended contract after one year. The opportunity is only open to applicants with the legal right to work in the Czech Republic (EU).
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is hiring a Digital Forensics Editor to join our Central News Department.
You will be supporting and contributing to digital investigative work produced by RFE/RL’s Central News and Language Services (LSs), assisting LSs in remote reporting techniques to significantly augment our ability to tell impactful stories from afar. You will also be responsible for creating verification workflows that result in stories for RFE/RL newsrooms.
This role is for you if you have a nose for a good story, are absolutely committed to journalistic impartiality, can quickly identify whether a piece of audio or visual evidence could lead to impactful stories and can work creatively and cooperatively under pressure. Coding skills and a firm grasp of datavisual storytelling are also desirable.

WHAT DOES THE ROLE ENTAIL?
Among other responsibilities you will:
- assist LS in verification of user-generated content or open-source data
- keep up with world news and developments in RFE/RL’s countries
- in cooperation with colleagues work closely on digital investigations
- manage central list of shared tools and services to digital-forensic analysis
- pinpoint how digital evidence can lead to compelling story angles that offer unique value to the audience
ARE YOU THE RIGHT CANDIDATE?
The successful candidate will have:
- a skill at verifying documents, video, and images
- experience and skill in a range of digital-sleuthing techniques, including geolocation, image/video/audio/document verification, data preservation, corroboration and cross-referencing, and satellite-imagery analysis
- a BA degree in Journalism, IT, Communications, or related field, or the equivalent in experience
- at least two years of journalism experience with track record of digital-investigative work
- general knowledge of the RFE/RL’s countries
- Familiarity and experience in dealing with open- source technology solutions, using command line tools and basic scripting to analyze data (Python and SQL skills desirable)
- knowledge of computer-assisted reporting, including multimedia verification and other related tools for geolocation and information authentication
- ability to work various shifts, as assigned and on short notice
- discipline and experience of working under deadline and pressure
- proficiency in English language, Russian or another relevant language (Desirable)
