Features Writer
The Advocate, the largest news organization in Louisiana and a Pulitzer Prize winner, is looking for a features reporter for its Baton Rouge newsroom. The stories we’re after range from food/cooking, health, regional travel, arts, music, homes/garden, style trends and profiles of interesting people. We’re searching for someone who can balance daily coverage with enterprise stories in a competitive news market.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop feature story ideas based or as assigned
- Create relationships with people in the community to develop access to credible sources for future stories
- Quickly post stories online as appropriate and develop them further as needed
- Use social media tools to develop, distribute and enhance stories
- Help plan and execute the presentation of stories in a way that maximizes digital impact
- Regularly review metrics on story performance and develop story ideas based on top-performing content
- Ability to shift gears and change directions quickly
- Collaborate with other reporters or editors on stories and enterprise projects
- Meet all deadlines for projects as requested by editors
- Write stories using proper grammar and following AP style guidelines
- Rework pieces as requested by editors and update pieces as needed for ongoing or developing stories
Job Skills & Qualifications Required:
- A focus on producing accurate and factual stories
- Experience as a newspaper reporter
- Able to drive and operate a vehicle
- Technologically savvy, with proficiency in computers, apps, CMS, file sharing and ability to use other office equipment
