Sports Designer
The Advocate, locally owned, is the largest news organization in Louisiana, publishing daily in New Orleans (The Times-Picayune), Baton Rouge (The Advocate) and the Lafayette area (The Acadiana Advocate). Our Baton Rouge sports desk is the central nervous system for our sports department, which produces content for all three markets, in digital and print.
We are seeking someone who can design great pages and can also augment our digital content with graphic cards and other visuals. We need someone who can make a page stand out but also has good news judgment and a love for sports.
We are a family-owned news organization that believes in a robust print product but also has a clear path toward digital long-term success.
This position is a key role in our sports department. For each of the past three years, we’ve been judged to have one of the best sports sections in the nation. We have set a high standard, and the right candidate will go a long, long way in helping us maintain it.
Requirements:
Daily news experience is preferred, as well as experience with InDesign and Photoshop. Knowledge of Illustrator is a plus.
Preferred but not required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism (or related field) is preferred but not required.
- Copy editing experience at a daily newspaper is preferred but not required.
- Considerable knowledge of the structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.
- Knowledge of newspaper page design.
- Good knowledge of media production and written communication methods.
