The Asahi Shimbun newspaper is seeking a skilled and highly motivated News Assistant/Staff Reporter for its San Francisco office. The position will directly report to the Bureau Chief.
Founded in 1879, The Asahi Shimbun is widely recognized as Japan's leading and most respected national daily newspaper. It has a circulation of more than four million copies per day, and is read by a wide segment of the Japanese public. The newspaper is particularly influential among Japan's government officials, policymakers and academics. It also reaches an English-speaking audience through its English language website. Its North American bureaus are located in Washington, D.C., New York and San Francisco.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a bachelor's degree (master's degree preferable). Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently are required. Background in technology and business, an interest in pursuing a career in journalism and Spanish language skills are preferable. Japanese language skills helpful but not required.
Job Description: Primary duties include assisting our San Francisco-based bureau chief by attending press briefings, conducting thorough background research, gathering news and views, arranging and conducting interviews, and closely following developments in new technologies, business, and finance, with a primary focus on San Francisco and Silicon Valley. However, candidates must be flexible and willing to work with other correspondents on other issues when necessary. Some administrative support, such as transcribing interviews and other assignments, is also required. Some domestic travel may be required.
This is a news assistant/reporting position with no/limited article-writing or byline opportunities. Compensation includes overtime pay, excellent medical/dental benefits, sick leave and a 401k plan (elective). The position will be available starting immediately. Remote work is allowed up to two days a week with approval from the management.
