The Chestnut Hill Local, recently named the best weekly newspaper in the state by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association, is seeking a new publisher. Serving one of Philadelphia’s most historic and diverse neighborhoods for more than 65 years, The Local is looking for a visionary new leader to implement our plans to embrace not-for-profit status and grow — with broader online and in-print coverage of Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy and Germantown and to continue the success of Wissahickon, an acclaimed quarterly regional magazine.

This is an opportunity for a dynamic, innovative Publisher to guide a unique community-association-owned media company into its digital future.

The Publisher is responsible for the success of all phases of the enterprise: strategy, fundraising, financial management and day-to-day operations. Primary responsibilities include market strategy, sales execution, and community engagement. The ideal candidate will have a record of success in both traditional and new media with a clear understanding of digital advertising and marketing.

The Publisher must exhibit effective team leadership of various departments, including sales, circulation, editorial, production, human resources and finance. They will have the direction and support of a volunteer board of directors — including community leaders and seasoned journalists — to develop the vision for the Local and execute and deliver on that vision.

Responsibilities include:

  • Development of revenue and profits in media, digital, and alternative revenue streams;
  • Planning short and long-term strategies to achieve goals and objectives;
  • Establishing a challenging and enriching work environment for all employees;
  • Assuring effective recruitment, selection, training, development, and evaluation of personnel;
  • Meeting projected revenue and expense goals;
  • Leading team sales efforts, both in advertising and circulation;
  • Preparing the annual budget;
  • Enthusiastic involvement in community events and organizations; and
  • Regular reporting to the board of directors and attendance at board meetings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of sales and management techniques;
  • Prior experience in advertising, sales, with a news organization in a competitive market;
  • Strong management and recruiting skills in building a culture of inclusiveness and belonging;
  • Experience working in industries undergoing substantial change and transformation; and
  • A solid understanding of digital media;

The Local offers a competitive salary and benefits package as well as a challenging and rewarding work environment.
