Director of Marketing, Events and Communications

The Poynter Institute   Saint Petersburg, FL   Full-time     Advertising / Marketing / Public Relations
Posted on February 2, 2024

In its 50-year history, the Poynter Institute has evolved from a small school providing professional development for journalists to an influential organization with global reach that elevates and strengthens journalism in service to democracy.

We're seeking a director of marketing, events and communications who can increase engagement with and support of Poynter’s vital mission to strengthen journalism and democracy via teaching, fact-checking, media literacy, ethical practice, public engagement, and other key programs. The successful candidate will find innovative ways on a nonprofit's budget to tell Poynter’s story to multiple audiences – journalists, citizens, corporate sponsors, and philanthropic funders – and increase business opportunities and support of Poynter’s work.

We seek to grow our prestige across our many brands, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning PolitiFact, the largest political fact-checking organization in the U.S; MediaWise, a pioneering media literacy program with a special connection to Gen Z; the International Fact-Checking Network, which brings together fact-checking groups from around the globe to share best practices; and our best-in-class teaching programs that transform news organizations, leaders and journalists to create a sustainable future.

We are looking for someone passionate about our mission and with experience raising the profile of a non-profit, media, or teaching organization, especially through brand building, email marketing, public events, digital marketing, content marketing, and earned media.

  • Develop a cohesive, multi-channel marketing strategy to grow and promote Poynter’s brands, including its signature teaching programs, PolitiFact, MediaWise, the International Fact-Checking Network, and the Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership.
  • Direct an events team that executes world-class in person and virtual public events for Poynter’s brands and create a growth strategy for new events and revenue.
  • Tell Poynter’s story by building a compelling suite of multimedia marketing collateral, including digital, for our brands and programs and keeping this material updated as needs change.
  • Raise Poynter’s profile by developing an earned media strategy. This includes developing relationships with media outlets to proactively pitch Poynter’s experts, as well as fielding and assessing incoming media requests to best position Poynter and its brands as trusted authorities on journalism and media issues.
  • Build, manage, and coach a marketing team of effective communicators with big ideas and brand management experience.
  • Conduct competitive market research to keep abreast of trends and customer interests.
  • Advise on product development and develop and execute marketing campaigns for teaching product launches to drive audience interest and sales for training. This includes testing, tracking, results reporting, analyses, and recommendations.
  • Ensure a seamless customer experience and create customer journey touchpoints for contacts and clients. Build new audience pipelines and partnerships for our courses and programming.
  • Work closely with the sales and partnerships team to align sales and marketing strategies.
  • Develop strong social media campaigns to build Poynter's brands and work closely with our audience team to execute them.

  • Proven experience as a director in marketing, with experience in branding, email and digital marketing and events
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Analytical and creative thinking
  • Knowledgeable about current online marketing techniques and best practices
  • Thorough knowledge of web analytics (e.g. Google Analytics, WebTrends, etc.) and Google Adwords
  • Customer-oriented approach
  • BS/BA in marketing, business administration, communications, or relevant field or experience

Familiarity with the world of journalism is a bonus, but not a necessity. Familiarity with Salesforce is a plus.
