The Poynter Institute   Saint Petersburg, FL   Full-time     Education
Posted on July 25, 2022

Are you an accomplished journalist who thrives on coaching and mentoring others? Do you know how to transform your experiences into teachable moments that transcend job functions? And are you eager to share best practices in journalism with motivated colleagues from around the world?

The Poynter Institute seeks to expand its world-class faculty with someone who is an expert in at least one area of journalism (investigative, audience engagement, product, data visualization, photojournalism) and who has the desire to learn to teach other topics (particularly ethics, DEI, leadership, writing/editing).

If you’ve ever captured the attention of colleagues at a brown bag or astounded a room during a journalism conference, you could have the skills we seek. If you’ve been an adjunct at a journalism or communications school, you might be the right person for this job.

In lieu of a cover letter, please send a resume outlining your journalism credentials and detail any non-work experiences that have enriched your worldview. Please also highlight notable thought leadership related to journalism.

Candidates who advance in this process will be asked to provide an example of teaching or a professional presentation. Be prepared to share ideas for how to engage with Poynter’s core audience of journalists: live and in person, hybrid with remote components, and asynchronous.

Poynter aims to create best practices to guide quality journalism around the world. That goal is best served by a multi-generational staff who embody a range of life experiences and viewpoints. Candidates of all cultures and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Preferred qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of journalism experience, with at least 2 years of supervisory or management experience
  • A record of editorial accomplishment and innovation in a multimedia news environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Strong public speaking presence
  • Familiarity with a range of leadership styles
  • Ability to travel frequently, including international travel

This job is eligible for remote work in the United States, though preference will be given to candidates based in Tampa Bay or Washington, D.C.

In addition to salary, we offer:

  • excellent professional development opportunities and the ability to progress in both your craft and career
  • one of the better paid parental leave plans in journalism
  • the last two weeks of the calendar year off

Start date: January 2023
